James Calhoun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Calhoun was born in South Carolina (his father was a cousin of John C. Calhoun) and his parents died when he was 18.
Politically, Calhoun was a Whig in a largely Democratic district but was elected to the Georgia General Assembly in 1837 from DeKalb County, the State Senate in 1851 and the next year moved to Atlanta, where ten years later he served four one-year terms as its mayor.
Calhoun and the city council protested this order, claiming that most of those who had not fled could not leave on account of their age, sickness, pregnancy, or destitude.

 John Caldwell Calhoun
Calhoun stood, therefore, alone in the senate, main-raining the premise of a "constitutional compact." and his conclusion of the right of a state to nullify a law while remaining in the union, or to secede from the union entirely.
Calhoun was equal to the plausible and powerful support of this theory, which, however inconclusive from his premise of the constitutional compact, can not impair the truth of that premise, which, with transcendent ability and accurate historic research, he established on an impregnable foundation.
Calhoun saw the south in a minority in all branches of the government, and he desired, by giving to the south a concurrent and distinct voice in the organism of our system to secure her against invasion of her rights by a hostile majority, and thus to make her safe in the union.

etter, 15 March 1797, of James Calhoun, Baltimore, to Robert Purviance, collector of the Port of Baltimore, relates details of why Calhoun's ship, the Lydia, under Capt. William Todd, had not arrived.
After receiving severe damage in a storm, Calhoun wrote, the Lydia was forced to divert to St. Croix in the West Indies.
Calhoun was concerned as to whether the problems with the ship's delay constituted "a breach of the act for licensing vessels in the coasting trade or of the revenue laws of the United States."
