James Challis Most Excellent UK Team" in his honour.
Challis finally began his, somewhat reluctant, search in July 1846, unaware that Frenchman
Adams failed to promote his prediction successfully and there was little enthusiasm for a systematic search of the heavens until Herschel's intervention.

Neptune (planet) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, in the same year, John Herschel started to champion the mathematical approach and persuaded James Challis to search for the planet.
Challis later realised that he had observed the planet twice in August, failing to identify it owing to his casual approach to the work.
After much procrastination, Challis began his reluctant search in July

NEPTUNE (PLANET) - LoveToKnow Article on NEPTUNE (PLANET)
During the two following years he investigated the possible eccentricity of the orbit, and in September 1845 communicated his results to Professor James Challis.
It was afterwards found that Challis in his sweeps had observed the planet on the 4th of August, but, not having compared his observations with those made subsequently, had failed to detect it.
Leverrier's first published communication on the subject was made to the French Academy on the loth of November 1845, a few days after Adams's results were in the hands of Airy and Challis.

Neptune's Discovery: The British Case for Co-Prediction, By Nick Kollerstrom
Challis repeated this at the November 13th RAS meeting, still without saying what the values were, and then reaffirmed it again at his Report to the Cambridge Observatory Syndicate on December 12th, still without showing it or declaring any of its values.
When next year he hears about the discovery, Challis writes off to the local newspaper Cambridge Chronicle on October 1st, and it is clear that he then had no memory of any such document ( see "Announcing The Discovery").
One is reminded of the bit of paper which Airy claimed to have received some weeks later than Challis, in October, which was likewise found to have the month and year but no day written on the top in another’s hand.

Challis, James - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about Challis, James
Challis admitted that if he had indeed conducted a search using Adams's predicted position and date he would have been within 2° of the planet's actual position and would almost certainly have spotted it.
Challis was born in Braintree, Essex, and educated at Cambridge.
But Challis did not take the calculations seriously and Airy did not even see them until the following year.

On 2 December 1865, at Depden, Lucy Challis, a widow, was married to George Balls, with George and Sarah Challis, as witnesses.
The witness Sarah's signature was clear and firm, and she may well have been the wife of George and later to have become the postmistress at Depden.

 Adams
At its meeting on 14 November 1846, as well as communications from Airy and Challis explaining their actions regarding Adams' prediction, a paper from Adams was read entitled Explanation of the observed irregularities in the motion of Uranus.
Challis and Stokes approached Adams to take on the directorship in place of Challis who wished to leave the post.
Urbain Le Verrier 's prediction was published in June 1846 while Adams' prediction was still only known to Challis and Airy.

 Neptune and Pluto
Challis and Airy each reported on the story of Adams 's predictions and Adams himself published his memoir An explanation of the observed irregularities in the motion of Uranus, on the hypothesis of disturbances caused by a more distant planet; with a determination of the mass, orbit, and position of the disturbing body.
The full story of the contributions of Adams, Challis and Airy were published at the 13 November meeting of the Royal Astronomical Society.
On 29 September Le Verrier 's paper of 31 August reached Challis.

James Melia was included at in the starting XV for the first time since Dunlop's sensational victory over Coalville in the last round of the competition.
Danny James took a kick out of a ruck situation and with a good charge down by the Dunlop backs put the Coalville full back under pressure, he fluffed it and missed the ball leading Danny James to take the ball in and score.
The next round to be played on or before 8th February 2004, will see backs James Reilly return to the side after injury to make his first appearance in the cup, along with recently injured winger Matthew Tate who sustained ankle ligament damage during training on the Monday session before the cup match.

The "curious arrangement" in Monthly Notices of the R. A. S.
I recently asked the Inter-Library Loan people — without whom this effort would have been paralysed long ago — to obtain a copy of a paper by James Challis, Director of the Observatory at Cambridge University.
My interest in Challis was for his subsequent theoretical remarks on refraction in planetary atmospheres, in which he (mistakenly) at first supposed that refraction in a possible lunar atmosphere might cause a brightening of the surface of the Sun during partial solar eclipses.
Challis had the misfortune to have actually observed Neptune repeatedly, and even to have noted ``appears to have a disc'' on one occasion, without making the least effort to follow up this observation.

 James Challis

 StarDate Online James Challis
If British astronomer James Challis had been a fisherman, he would have had a whopper of a fish story to tell the boys at the pub.
They got the credit for perhaps the biggest astronomical find of the 19th century -- and James Challis was left with the tale of the big one that got away.
Challis let one of the biggest catches in astronomy history get away: the planet Neptune.

 Re: Wow! So many Challis'!!!
As you stated, Ruth seems to be the daughter of James Challis and Mary Pratt.
James emigrated to Australia in 1855, was successful in gold mining in Adelong (also my mother's birthplace) and is buried in the cemetery there.
Mary Pratt (born 1762) is in turn the daughter of James Pratt and Margaret Gamgee who is in turn the daughter of Joseph Gamgee (born 1686) and Martha Hoy.

 History of the Northumberland Telescope
However, the correspondence between Airy and Challis shows that much of the adjustment was done by Challis.
With the use of microscopes and calibrated and vernier scales, along with declination rods, the telescope could be moved with great precision to any position in right ascension and declination; such precision being essential in work such as that of Challis to attempt to find Neptune.
The original dome (replaced in 1932) was not anything like the current one; rather, it was a wooden structure moving on six cannon-balls.

 Who is Prof. James Challis?
Professor James Challis is a sort-of anti-hero of CUAS, the Cambridge University Astronomical Society.
Challis' methodical search of the predicted area, concentrated on objects which appeared to move between observing sessions.
Challis used the Northumberland Telescope in his search for Neptune.
