In 1834 Cockburn was well enough thought of to be made a member of the commission to inquire into the state of the corporations of England and Wales.
Cockburn made an exhaustive study of the medical aspects of the case, and the prisoner's comment when convicted after a twelve days' trial was, alluding to the attorney-general's advocacy, "It was the riding that did it." In 1854 Cockburn was made recorder of Bristol.
The greatest public occasion on which Sir Alexander Cockburn acted, outside his usual judicial functions, was that of the "Alabama" arbitration, held at Geneva in 1872, in which he represented the British government, and dissented from the view taken by the majority of the arbitrators, without being able to convince them.

James Cockburn, QC (February 13, 1819 – August 14, 1883) was a Canadian Conservative politician, and a father of Canadian Confederation.
In 1872, Cockburn was nominated for a second term as Speaker despite reservations by the Opposition that he had been too favourable to the government in his rulings.
Cockburn lost his seat in the 1874 election that had been precipitated by the Pacific Scandal and that brought down the Macdonald government.

COCKBURN, SIR ALEXANDER JAMES EDMUND [Cockburn, Sir Alexander James Edmund] 1802-80, British jurist.
He was called to the bar in 1829, and a volume of reports on election cases (1832) brought him into national prominence as a trial lawyer.
He was noted particularly for his defense advocacy, one of his most famous successes being the acquittal (1843) of Daniel McNaghten, who had killed Sir Robert Peel's secretary, on grounds of insanity; the "McNaghten rules" became the basic definition of criminal responsibility in most English-speaking jurisdictions.

Born in 1772 in London, Cockburn went to sea at the age of 14.
Cockburn played a major role in the War of 1812 as second in command to Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren to the end of March 1814 and then to Warren's successor, Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane for the rest of the war.
Cockburn received the order of the Bath at the beginning of 1815, and after the war, on his return to Europe, he was immediately given the job of conveying Napoleon in the Northumberland to Saint Helena, where he remained for some months as governor of the island and the Emperor's jailor.

William Cockburn (?-1804) from Berwickshire, Scotland, settled in Kingston, Ulster County, in the early 1760s and was employed as a surveyor, land agent and speculator, primarily in Ulster County, for the Hardenbergh and Hurley Patents, but also for surrounding counties and for his personal land dealings in what is now Vermont.
The Cockburns were employed for the most part by Johannis Hardenbergh, Gulian Verplanck, the Kingston Corporation, Robert Livingston, as well as by various individual farm owners and renters.
