Connolly was born to poor Irish American parents, fisherman John Connolly and Ann O'Donnell, as one of twelve children, in South Boston, Massachusetts.
Connolly decided to participate, and submitted a request for a leave of absence to the Chairman of the Harvard University Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports and was denied.
Connolly died in New York at the age of 88.

Ironically, despite Connolly's role in the Easter Rising and subsequent execution by the British authorities, in a 2002 poll conducted by the BBC of the 100 Greatest Britons, Connolly was voted the 64th greatest Briton of all time, ahead of other notable Britons such as David Lloyd George and Sir Walter Raleigh.

James Connolly (June 5, 1868 - May 12, 1916) was an Irish nationalist and Labour leader.
While active as a Socialist in Britain Connolly was among the founders of the Socialist Labour Party which split from the British Socialist Party in 1903.
Connolly stood aloof from the leadership of the Irish Volunteers as being too bourgeois, and unconcerned with Ireland's economic independence.

Connolly later took second place in the high jump with a leap of 5-5, and third place in the long jump (20- 1/2).

James Brendan Connolly was a passenger aboard the RMS Republic when she was hit by the inbound immigrant ship S.S. Florida in the early morning hours of January 23, 1909.
Connolly's sometimes eloquent, yet always frank, analysis of the changing nature of sport from the last decade of the nineteenth century through the middle of the twentieth century provides a useful, contemporary assessment against which the assertions of others might be measured.
Connolly remained in favor with the International Olympic fraternity and, in 1954, he was invited to return to Athens for the 60th Anniversary of the Re-establishment of the Olympic Games.
