James Cracknell, OBE (born 5 May 1972) is an English rowing champion and double Olympic gold medallist.
However, in 2003 a disappointing season was capped by a failure to win the World Championships, and Pinsent and Cracknell were shifted into the coxless four, with Steve Williams and originally Alex Partridge, with Ed Coode replacing the injured Partridge for the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Cracknell is married to TV and radio presenter Beverley Turner; their son, Croyde, was born in 2004.

 Ben Fogle and James Cracknell complete the Across Atlantic Challenge
The weather conditions for this event were less than favourable and the crews had to battled against three low pressure systems, two tropical storms and the tail end of a hurricane, causing all sorts of problems with a number of dramatic capsizes and near misses.
Ben and James had their own near miss on the 10th of January when their boat flipped over after a wave hit them from behind, throwing Ben from the boat and flipping James upside down in the cabin.
James and Ben filmed their voyage for BBC documentary ‘Through Hell and High Water, which is to be aired this month.

James is jealous of the 2005 Worlds venue - "I've never raced in Japan" and clearly looking forward to hopefully competing at Eton in 2006, when he confidently expects "the biggest crowds ever to attend a World Champs" (so get your holiday plans sorted now, guys).
Cracknell has never felt entirely comfortable on bow-side, despite a good deal of hard work to acclimatise quickly, and it is the loss of instinct when under intense pressure that he regrets the most about the swap (and which could have been contributory to the poor 2003 season the pair had).
Cracknell would be the first to salute and celebrate that.

Returning to the coxless pairs in 2002, Ginn and Tomkins beat the heavily favoured British crew of Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell in a world cup race before finishing a close fourth at the World Championships.
In 2004, Pinset and Cracknell moved to the coxless four to better their chances for a medal.

Shortly before the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Pinsent and Cracknell teamed with Tim Foster and Steve Redgrave in the British coxless four and finished fourth in Lucerne.

Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell and television presenter Ben Fogle battled with British four-man crew Atlantic 4 for second place but the heavier crew won by just under five hours.
At one point the Atlantic 4 crew of David Martin, Neil Wightwick, Glynn Coupland and George Simpson trailed James Cracknell and Ben Fogle but upped their pace in the final stages to cross the line in 49 days 14 hours and 21 minutes.
