		James Craig, the actor once promoted as a successor to Clark Gable, died of lung cancer June 27 at Western Medical Center here.
		Craig began his film career in the 1930's and found himself stepping into Gable-style roles when the movie idol went into the armed services in World War II.
		Craig, whose real name was James Henry Meador, was born in Nashville, Tenn. He went to Hollywood to study acting in 1934 and landed his first leading role in the 1937 film ''Arizona Ames,'' in which he took the name James Mead.
