In the early 1870's, on the common ground of Vinegar Hill (roughly the area now contained by Alfred, Murray and Colborne Streets with the Creek forming the other boundary), James E. Darling and James Cran, played a four-hole course.
Soon Darling and Cran were joined by others; but not until 1879 was a golf club formally organized.
The history of the Brantford courses is the story of efforts put forth to develop better links, and it was not long before the members felt it was time to move to the second location of the club, to a small course in what was then the east end of the city, on Terrace Hill.

But the impression of disunity was reinforced by the disclosure that James Cran, the MP for Beverley, had resigned as unpaid parliamentary aide to Sir Patrick Mayhew, the Northern Ireland Secretary.
Party officials made a clumsy attempt to play down the resignation, claiming that it had happened two months ago and was the result of the MP needing more time to concentrate on boundary changes to his constituency which could reduce his majority at the next election.

The action by the whips was instrumental in persuading the Tories' most prominent fl member, Lord Taylor, to declare last night that he would remain in the party.

However, some Tories wondered how Mr Cran could reconcile his role in forcing Mr Robertson to sign an anti-racist statement with his public refusal to sign the commission for racial equality's anti-racism pact.

And although he has typically remained silent on the matter, one of those being criticised is Beverley and Holderness MP James Cran, even though his claim, at a mere £88,524, is comfortably this region's lowest.
Given Mr Cran's defence duties, his deafening silence is even more inexcusable for he has had ample opportunity to proffer the wisdom of his experience in the debates staged over the Iraq war, the overriding political issue of the past two years.
Meanwhile, the amount of time that Mr Cran spends on constituency work – his previously safe seat has become highly marginal under his tenureship – is also questionable.
