James Watson Cronin (born September 29, 1931) is an American nuclear physicist.
Cronin and co-researcher Val Logsdon Fitch were awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physics for a 1964 experiment that proved that certain subatomic reactions do not adhere to fundamental symmetry principles.
At present, Jim Cronin is Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago and a spokesperson for the Auger project.

At Princeton, Cronin and the American physicist Val L. Fitch, a former colleague from Brookhaven, conducted research on weak nuclear interactions, which are responsible for the transformation (decay) of subatomic particles.

James Cronin, Jr., married Vada Patterson of Hartford City on 3 October 1906 and was the father of three children; James Cronin III, Robert P. Cronin, and Helen Virginia Cronin Larkin.
James Cronin III died in April 1923 at the age of 15.
Cronin is also pictured with his son Robert, and in what may be a group photograph of bank employees.

Cronin was born on Sept. 29, 1931, in Chicago, while his father was a graduate student in classical languages and literatures at the University of Chicago.
Cronin joined the faculty at Princeton University in 1958, where he remained until 1971, when he was appointed the University Professor of Physics at the University of Chicago.
Cronin's honors include the National Medal of Science (1999), the University of Chicago's Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (1994), the Ernest Lawrence Memorial Award (1976) for outstanding contributions in the field of atomic energy, the John Price Wetherill Medal of the Franklin Institute (1975), and the Research Corporation Award (1968).

This family appears to start with James CRONIN (1814 - Jan 25, 1894) In 1853 he is listed as the holder of 156 acres of land at Rathorgan (parish of Dungourney) but does not appear in the Tithe Applotment books of 1823.
Denis CRONIN succeeded to Rathorgan and was in turn succeeded by his son James but when this James died in 1976 Rathorgan passed out of the Cronin name.
A daughter of James and Ellen CRONIN was Johannah, she married William KELLEHER of Clonmult by whom she had four sons and three daughters.
