The DeBarges, of African-American/French descent, signed with the Motown label in the 1970s and became one of their few successful performers during the 1980s.
DeBarge finally released their self-titled debut album in 1981, which was a commercial dissapointment.
DeBarge finally disbanded in 1989, though the members would continue to perform together on occasion until Bobby's death from AIDS in 1995.

But DeBarge is more famous for marrying pop royalty when he married future music legend Janet Jackson in 1984.
The marriage, however, was annulled in 1985 after Jackson told people she couldn't deal with James' drug abuse.

The family group DeBarge had the looks, the vocal talent and the backing of Motown that vaulted it quickly to the top of the Pop and Soul worlds in 1982.
However, its label as a “teen act” made DeBarge only as durable as its most recent hit, and the group disappeared in the mid 80s nearly as quickly as it came.
By 1986, El DeBarge was clearly becoming the first among equals in the group, and he recorded solo the upbeat main cut from the movie Short Circuit, “Who’s Johnny.” The cut went to number one, and he soon left the group to begin a solo career.
