James Dunlop was born in 1795 to a prominent family of Chambersburg Pennsylvania.
The son of Andrew and Sarah Bella Dunlop, James graduated Dickinson College in 1812, where he was a member of the Belle Lettres Society and considered a friendly, witty student.
Dunlop was admitted to the Franklin County Bar in 1817 and formed a partnership with his wife Maria’s brother, George Madeira.

Dunlop left Sydney for Scotland in February 1827 and was employed for four years at the observatory of Sir Thomas Brisbane.
In April 1831 Dunlop was appointed superintendent of the government observatory at Parramatta in succession to Rümker at a salary Of £300 a year.
Dunlop succeeded in getting the building repaired and started on his work with energy, but about 1835 his health began to fail, he had no assistant, and the building having been attacked by white ants fell gradually into decay.

We now know that most of the Dunlop family left Maybole about 1879 for the US and that Margaret died of liver cancer in Concord in 1903, at the age of 45, as noted on her death certificate.

The name itself is of a small village, and is Gaelic meaning something after the fashion of, fortfied hill by the bend in the stream.  The pre-Roman inhabitants of the area were Brythonic Celts, but they had to fight to hold their lands against the Gaels, and others.
There are cadet branches in various corners of the globe who can trace their genealogy in an unbroken line to that family, but the stem of the breed became extinct in 1858 when James Dunlop, Bart., died without leaving issue.
Please note: If George and Thomas Dunlop of this web site, or their forebears, had any connection with the Dunlops of Dunlop, then, as far as this writer is aware, all record of it has been lost in the mists of time.

Several woollen mills are engaged in carding and spinning for the carpet and bonnet trades; the largest concern is that belonging to Alexander Kerr Esq of Robertland, and occupied by Messrs Muir, Dunlop and Co, who have a steam engine for propelling the machinery on the occurrence of droughts or frosts.

Their more immediate ancestor, as appears from family writes, was Hugh Dunlop, son of Allan Dunlop, who left Scotland early in the 17th century.
There is an old tombstone of the family remaining in the churchyard of the parish where they originally settled, but the earliest dates are worn out, only the figure of a spead eagle, the arms of Dunlop, is still distinctly to be seen upon it.
HUGH DUNLOP, who is stated to have left Scotland and settled in Sligo, Ireland, about the year 1600.
