James E Kyes remained on guard as the Navy oompleted the Hungnam withdrawal of 24 December after embarking 105,000 troops, 91,000 refugees and vast quantities of military cargo.
James E Kyes departed San Diego 27 August and joined Boxer (CV-21) and Bon Homme Richard (C17-31) on 20 September in patrolling the Sea of Japan.
After returning to the West Coast 12 March 1962, James E Kyes assumed an "in-commission-in-reserve" status 16 April and underwent FRAM I conversion at Bremerton, Wash., to prepare for her role in the new Navy.

James Ellsworth Kyes, born in Everett, Wash., 16 April 1906, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1930.
Kyes was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously for "extraordinary heroism" during action against enemy submarines in the North Atlantic 23 December 1943.
Kyes assumed an "in-commission-in-reserve" status 16 April and underwent FRAM I conversion at Bremerton, Wash., to prepare for her role in the new Navy.

On 13 March, before it was silenced by air strikes from TF 77's planes, one battery landed shells near Manchester (CL- 83), Douglas H. Fox (DD-779), James E. Kyes (DD-787), and McGinty (DE-365).
Eight days after Wiltsie and Theodore E. Chandler (DD- 717) had destroyed a train near Tanchon on 3 June, communist shore batteries took Wiltsie under fire off Wonsan, lobbing 45 105-millimeter shells in her direction, scoring a hit on the destroyer's fantail.
On that day, Wiltsie participated in sinking the after section of the hull of Frank E. Evans (DD-754), the destroyer that had been cut in two during a collision with Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne the previous 3 June.

Everett F. Larson was under the control of Commander Destroyer Force, Atlantic Fleet, Destroyer Squadron 10, Destroyer Division 102, she won the Destroyer Force "E" efficiency award four times, including consecutive awards in 1953 and 1954.
Operations off the coast of California, and north to Seattle, prepared her for deployments to the Far East in 1957, 1958, 1959,and 1960.
In April, 1963, Everett F. Larson was transferred from DESRON 19 to DESRON 23 which had made a name for itself during World War II under the command of Admiral Arleigh Burke when it first took the name of "the Little Beavers".

The Gearing Class Destroyer USS William R. Rush DD 714 was commissioned in 1945.
USS Rush was then transferred to the navy of the Republic of Korea and became ROKS Kang Won DD 922 operating with the South Korean Navy until 1979.
All 105 Gearing Class Destroyers from the USS Gearing DD 710 to the USS Meredith DD 890 are available in a multitude of configurations and sizes.

The problem of the destroyers with duplicate names can be solved by using their assigned fleet numbers added to the name.
The use of class listing, is to ease the checking, as I mentioned before, MB doesn't recognise it and goes for the alphabet method and so all your destroyers with the name Barry would be lumped together.
Not all of the DDs or submarines are represented, only some from each class.

 Salvage and Recovery
LARSON (DD 830) went aboard the slowly sinking after half of USS FRANK E.
Within a matter of minutes about 5 tons of weight was Jettisoned by cutting loose a large ventilation fan motor, a loading machine used for training gun crews, a damaged boat davit, and the ships motor whale boat (which was later recovered by personnel from USS JAMES E.
The basic purpose is to train together and develop a capability among the SEATO navies to work together effectively to meet possible threats to our mutual security.

The hit caused a three foot hole in the main deck, one serious and three minor personnel casualties.
When informed of the firing and the necessity to evacuate the injured personnel, COMDESDIV 282 designated USS Henderson (DD 785) to lay down heavy suppression fire while USS Owen (DD536), with medical officer aboard, approached the island and took aboard the casualties.

The KYES was in service from the end of WW II until 1973.
We have located many of our former shipmates in our association; many of whom served at the time of the loss of the Pueblo.
