Gunn was a sophisticated "hipster", a dapper dresser who loved cool jazz; where other gumshoes were often coarse, Peter Gunn was portrayed as the epitome of "cool".
Gunn continued to demonstrate his combat skill and worthiness as a fighter, earning himself the role of "the muscle." However, his increasing involvement with Angel Investigations meant he had less time to spend with his former colleagues, and Gunn was forced to choose between his old group and the new one.

SF writer and historian Gunn was an English professor at the University of Kansas, and this novel is his response to the student radicals of the 1960s.
The two major weaknesses are the dated subject matter (the radical student movement died out almost completely by 1972), and the lack of any character development for Tom Gavin, the protagonist.
Also, Gunn never paints a coherent picture of how the US has come to its current state; he offers a vague outline, but the logic of his future society is not entirely consistent.
