Handbook of Texas Online: FERGUSON, JAMES EDWARD
James Edward (Pa) Ferguson, Texas governor, son of James Edward and Fannie (Fitzpatrick) Ferguson, was born on August 31, 1871, near Salado, Bell County, Texas.
Ferguson was reelected by a majority of about 60,000 votes, but opposition was sufficient to show that many Texans, including a number who were not prohibitionists, were displeased with his stewardship.
Ferguson declared that the legislature constituted little more than a "kangaroo court," but only a few months before, both the House and the Senate had refused to sustain charges against him, and his removal from office was far from certain when the legislature convened in special session.

Ferguson was found guilty by the Senate of 10 counts, including misapplication of public funds, failure to properly respect and enforce the banking laws of the state, and receiving $156,500 in currency from a source that he refused to reveal.
Ferguson resigned the day before the judgement was announced and claimed that the verdict no longer applied to him.
Nonetheless, Ferguson kept his name before the public, running unsuccessfully for governor in 1918, president in 1920, and the Senate in 1922.

Handbook of Texas Online: FERGUSON, MIRIAM AMANDA WALLACE [MA]
Ferguson served as the first lady of Texas during the gubernatorial terms of her husband (1915-17), who was impeached during his second administration.
Ma Ferguson pardoned an average of 100 convicts a month, and she and "Pa" were accused by critics of accepting bribes of land and cash payments.
Ferguson continued her liberal pardoning and parole policies, but even that action did not stir as much controversy as in her first administration since every convict paroled or pardoned represented that much less fiscal strain on the state during the depression.

Issues: Perspectives (December 2002): In Memoriam: E. James Ferguson
Jim Ferguson published his masterpiece at a time when Americans, flushed with pride at having saved the world from totalitarianism and armored intellectually for the Cold War, wanted their history as a pageant, with none of the complicated questions raised by earlier studies in the progressive tradition launched by Charles Beard.
Ferguson served from 1941 to 1945 as a technical sergeant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, and then became an instructor at the University of Maryland beginning in 1947.
They were all Ferguson's academic offspring, and it was sad indeed that ill health prevented him from attending the official celebration of the project's completion at a scholarly conference held at CUNY's new home in the spring of 2001.

Governor James "Pa" Ferguson - 1914 campaign speech - Texas State Library
James E. Ferguson was one of the most colorful, dominant, and controversial figures in the history of Texas politics.
Ferguson was no stranger to politics by 1914, when he jumped into the governor's race with an anti-prohibition stance, vowing to veto any prohibition measures that came to his desk.
He had declared war on the University of Texas, promising "the biggest bear fight that has ever taken place in the history of the state of Texas." Ferguson considered the university an elitist institution that took money away from the "country boys," and gave it to professors, whom he scorned as lazy freeloaders.
