  James Fergusson (architect) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Fergusson (22 January 1808-9 January 1886), a Scottish writer on architecture, was born at Ayr.
Previously to this, in 1862, he issued his History of Modern Architecture, in which the subject was continued from the Renaissance to the present day, the period of modern architecture being distinguished as that of revivals and imitations of ancient styles, which began with the Renaissance.
He was adviser with Austen Layard in the scheme of decoration for the Assyrian court at The Crystal Palace, and indeed assumed in 1856 the duties of general manager to the Palace Company, a post which he held for two years.

(1808-1877), British surgeon, the son of James Fergusson of Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire, was born at Prestonpans, East Lothian, on the 20th of March 1808.
After receiving his early education at Lochmaben and the high school of Edinburgh, he entered the university of Edinburgh with the view of studying law, but soon afterwards abandoned his intention and became a pupil of the anatomist Robert Knox (1791182) whose demonstrator he was appointed at the age of twenty.
As a surgeon Fergussons greatest merit is that of having introduced the practice of conservative surgery, by which he meant the excision of a joint rather than- the amputation of a limb.

Fergusson College, the oldest institution offering higher education in Pune, was established in 1885 by Lokmanya Tilak and Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, both members of the Deccan Education Society established a year earlier.

Supposedly, in any case, his wife Margaret (Lyall) Fergusson DID come to the US and died in International Falls, Minnisota sometime after 1914, perhaps around 1925 (unconfirmed).
James and Margaret's children were sent off to live with an uncle in the Orkney Islands, on the Island of Hoy.

The letterbooks of Alexander Hamilton, factor for Piscataway, Maryland, and Robert Fergusson, factor for Georgetown, Maryland, reveal the difficulty Glassford and Company and subsequent firms encountered when collecting pre-war debts.
With the death of John Glassford in 1783, the surviving members of Glassford and Company, Henry Glassford, James Gordon, Henry Riddell, John Campbell, and Archibald Henderson, presented the power of attorney for the company to Robert Fergusson, factor for Georgetown.
It is unclear when the company passed out of the hands of the Scottish merchants and into the control of local owners.
