James and Laura resided in Queenston in Upper Canada (present-day Ontario), while her family went on to settle present day Ingersoll, Ontario.
On October 13, 1812, James Secord was injured at the Battle of Queenston Heights, part of the emerging War of 1812.
Laura and James are buried in Drummond Hill Cemetery in Niagara Falls, Ontario at a monument (with a bust of Laura on top) close to that marking the Battle of Lundy's Lane.

FitzGibbon himself was a Protestant whose father had renounced the Roman Catholic faith probably to avoid discrimination under the anti-Catholic laws in Ireland during the 1780s.
FitzGibbon died at 83 and was buried in the crypt of St George’s Chapel.

Fitzgibbon commanded a detachment of some fifty "chosen men" of the 49th Regiment, who were employed harassing enemy troops and closely monitoring their movements.
Fitzgibbon wrote several testimonials in her behalf, the one dated 1827 stated that 'in consequence of this information" he had placed Native warriors in a position to intercept the Americans." Thus he made it clear that Laura's warning had indeed made victory possible at Beaver Dam.
Despite written support for her petitions from James Fitzgibbons on one of which he had scrawled, "In a moment of much hurry and from memory," her many appeals were regularly refused.
