§4. James Brunton Stephens. XII. The Literature of Australia and New Zealand. Vol. 14. The Victorian Age, Part Two. The Cambridge History of English and American Literature: An Encyclopedia in Eighteen Volumes. 1907–21
The poems of Philip Joseph Holdsworth, of Francis Adams, of James Lister Cuthbertson, of Robert Richardson, of William Gay, of Grace Jennings Carmichael, of Barcroft Henry Boake and of Victor James Daley show poetry firmly established in Australia, well received by a public that can judge for itself, and flowering with a peculiar vigour.
To the period of Kendall and Gordon belongs also the earlier work of the Queensland poet, James Brunton Stephens, a Scot who went to Australia in 1866.
Stephens is a poet of great strength and fine imagination.

Fort Tours James Francis Blair and James Hart
James Hart also thought he was going to die, but stated that he was determined to live until he could reach home, so he could report what had happened to James Blair, whom he thought was being carried away by the Indians.
James Blair and James Hart turned their horses and started to make a dash back toward Camp Colorado, but James Blair's horse was anxious to go on toward home, and simply refused to go in the other direction.
James Hart's successful escape was very largely due to the Indians struggle with the brave little James Blair, who was now in the hands of the savages.

Introduction. Colum, Padraic. 1922. Anthology of Irish Verse
And yet, as the historian of Scottish Gaelic literature, Dr. Magnus MacLean, has said, the arrival of James MacPherson marked a great moment in the history of all Celtic literatures.
With Sir Samuel Ferguson there is associated a poet whom he long outlived, James Clarence Mangan.
MacPherson’s compositions which he attributed to the Gaelic bard Ossian were, in every sense of the word, original.

 Dictionary of Australian Biography We-Wy
There had been some friction between the trustees and the previous headmaster, W. Stephens, afterwards professor of geology at Sydney university, and Stephens had resigned and taken some of his pupils with him to a new school which he founded.
While in Australia he wrote a little for the press but published nothing in book form, and though befriended by James Smith (q.v.) and others he was obliged to apply for admittance to the Melbourne benevolent asylum in February 1862.
The exclusives and the emancipists were still at odds but there had been great increases in the number of free settlers coming to the colony.
