Gillett was born in Austin, Texas, on November 4, 1856, the son of James S. and Elizabeth (Harper) Gillett.
Gillett was one of the thirty men chosen to serve and was mustered in on September 1, 1877.
Jim Gillett died in a hospital in Temple on June 11, 1937, of heart failure and is buried in Marfa.

Gillett was the project scientist for the International Gemini Observatory, a pair of advanced 315-inch (8-meter) telescopes located at Mauna Kea, Hawaii and Cerro Pachon, Chile.
Gillett pioneered the exploration of astronomical sources in the thermal infrared, the region of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths from 8 to 13 microns.
Gillett also was active in space-based astronomy, serving as a visiting scientist to the Astrophysics Division in the Office of Space Science at NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C., from August 1987 to August 1989.

Gillett made penciled entries whenever a fugitive was killed or captured; in the index by the entry for John Wesley Hardin, for example, he wrote "in the pen." On the blank notebook pages Gillett listed and described numerous other fugitives from justice, including Sam Bass and his gang.
Now proudly owned by the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame in Waco, Gillett's personal copy of "The Book" and his handwritten notebook annotations provide a fascinating glimpse into the life of a Texas Ranger and the state of "law & order" in Texas in the 19th century.
Accurately reproduced along with the illustrations of reward posters, Gillett's calling cards, and other ephemera found tucked into his personal copy of "The Book," Fugitives from Justice is an important contribution to the history of the Texas Rangers and of Texas.

One of the prominent figures in Menard county in days gone by was Captain James Callan, who spent the best years of a noble, vigorous manhood for Texas and the welfare and advancement of her people.
Captain Callan was born at Georgetown, District of Columbia, May 6, 1833, and on Christmas day, 1857, landed in Texas, he being at the date of his arrival twenty-four years of age.
He was with Captain Roberts' company of Rangers in many expeditions against the Indians, one of which was the desperate fight on the North Concho Plains, when Herman Lehmann, a white captive came near meeting death.
