James Fenimore Cooper was the son of Judge William Cooper, the self-made developer from New Jersey who had founded the frontier settlement of Cooperstown in 1786, the little village in which his son James would spend more than half his life, and half his career as America's first internationally recognized novelist.
Cooper was annoyed at Scott's description of ships and the sea, a subject about which Scott knew little or nothing, and believed he could do better.
Before Cooper, when novels dealt with sailors at all, they were described as ignorant and crude louts, interested only in booze and sex, to be exploited and made fun of in port towns.

Cooper didn't publish much but was generous in letting other naturalists, including Audubon, Nuttall, DeKay and Bonaparte (who named this bird in his honor) use his specimens and notes.
Cooper was also a great help to John Torrey (1796-1873) the botanist who prepared many of the botanical reports coming out of various US government sponsored expeditions to the West in the last half of the 1800's.
James Graham Cooper, a protege of Spencer Baird, was attached for a time to the Pacific Railroad Co. survey commanded by I. Stevens (1853-54) and discovered and named the desert tortoise in honor of Louis Agassiz (Gopherus agassizii) and a warbler after Baird's shy pretty daughter Lucy, who was in turn, named after Audubon's wife.

Graham became an Economic Officer in Tangier, Morocco 1951-54, Political Officer in Beirut, Lebanon 1954-57, and Paris 1957-58, Deputy Principal Officer in Dakar, Senegal 1958-1961, Personnel Officer Dept. of State, Washington, DC 1962-64, and Deputy Chief of Mission in Conakry, Guinea 1964-66, in 1966, he was detailed to the National War College.
Graham was asked by the Committee in his native St. Nazaire to undertake the reconstruction of the American Memorial.
Graham died before the completion of the reconstruction of the memorial and the committee decided to donate the additional funds for the construction and maintenance of a “Canot de Sauvetage” (a rescue boat) which bears the name of Pierre Robert Graham.

William Alexander Graham of Hillsborough, N.C., was a lawyer, legislator, United States senator, Secretary of the Navy, Whig vice-presidential candidate in 1852, Confederate senator, trustee of the Peabody Fund, and member of the board of arbitration for the Maryland and Virginia boundary dispute.
Graham began attending the University of North Carolina in January 1821 and was an active member of the Dialectic Society.
Graham was reelected for a second term and was governor from January 1845 to January 1849.

Born and educated in New York City, James G. Cooper (1830-1902) was a naturalist and physician with Isaac Stevens' Pacific Railroad Survey expedition of 1853.
These papers consist of journals and manuscripts containing Cooper's descriptions of his travels in Oregon and Washington territories, California, and his homeward trip through Panama, and as far north as Cape Hatteras.
Also included are sketches of the route; an index of animal and plant specimens collected; and a map of the Oregon Territory, 1849, and the Columbia River, 1841.
