James Wilson Grimes (October 20, 1816 – February 7, 1872), born in Deering, New Hampshire, was an American politician, serving as the Whig governor of and senator from Iowa.
Grimes served as a member of the Iowa Territorial House of Representatives 1838–1839, 1843–1844.
Grimes was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1859 and reelected in 1865 He served from March 4, 1859, until December 6, 1869, when he resigned due to ill health.

James Wilson Grimes, governor of and senator from Iowa, was born in Deering, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, October 20, 1816 and died in Burlington, Iowa, February, 7 1872.
After the formation of Iowa territory Grimes was a delegate to its assembly in 1838 and 1843, and in 1852, after its admission to the Union, was a member of the legislature.
Grimes was one of the few Republican senators who voted "not guilty," and this act brought upon him a storm of condemnation which lasted but a short time, owing to the evident fact that his vote had been strictly in accordance with what he considered his duty.

Letters of James F. Grimes, a Union soldier of the 17th U.S. Infantry during the Civil War (1861-1865), written to Sarah A. Jones while Grimes was stationed mainly in Virginia near Warrenton and Culpepper, mentioning camp life and current events, but primarily of a more personal and affectionate nature.
Grimes was promoted to Field Officer shortly afterward (for which he notes he was given a horse to ride), and was frequently in charge of his regiment in the absence of the commanding officer.
The James F. Grimes Letters consist of 27 letters hand-written in ink and pencil, dating from January 5, 1862 to June 15, 1864, all written to Miss Sarah A. Jones of Hillsboro, New Hampshire.
