James Howard Kindelberger, better known as "Dutch" to all who truly knew him, was born in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1895.
Dutch Kindelberger turned his frustrating experiences as a steel mill apprentice into the impetus for his education and accomplishments.
These were four pocket-poor, imagination-rich aeronautical geniuses named Glenn Martin, Donald Douglas, Larry Bell and Dutch Kindelberger.

The upshot was that North American became a manufacturing company run by James Kindelberger (who had been recruited from Douglas Aircraft Company), although it retained Eastern Airlines until 1938.
Kindelberger moved the company's operations to southern California, which allowed flying year-round, and decided to focus on training aircraft, on the theory that it would be easier than trying to compete with established companies.
But in 1934, the Air Mail Act of 1934 forced the breakup of such holding companies.

James Howard “Dutch” Kindelberger was born in Wheeling, W.V., on May 8, 1895, the son of steelworker Charles Frederick Kindelberger.
