James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton by Daniel Mytens.
The Most Noble James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton (June 19, 1606 - March 9, 1649), Scottish nobleman, son of James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton, and of the Lady Anne Cunningham, daughter of the Earl of Glencairn, was born on 19 June 1606.
As the descendant and representative of James Hamilton, 1st earl of Arran, he was the heir to the throne of Scotland after the descendants of James VI.

Scottish nobleman, son of James, 2nd marquess of Hamilton, and of the Lady Anne Cunningham, daughter of the earl of Glencairn, was born on the I 9th of June 1606.
Hamiltons conduct had at last incurred Charless resentment and he was sent, in January 1644, a prisoner to Pendennis Castle, in 1645 being removed to St Michaels Mount, where he was liberated by Fairfaxs troops on the 23rd of April 1646.
Hamilton, during his unfortunate career, had often been suspected of betraying the kings cause, and, as an heir to the Scottish throne, of intentionally playing into the hands of the Covenanters with a view of procuring the crown for himself.

Later his attempt to come to terms with Archibald Campbell, 8th earl of Argyll, apparently gave rise (1641) to the obscure plot known as the Incident, devised by James Graham, 5th earl of Montrose, to seize and probably murder Hamilton, his brother William (later 2d duke of Hamilton), and Argyll.
In 1648, Hamilton secured ratification in the Scottish Parliament of the agreement known as the Engagement between Charles and the Scots and led the Scottish army that invaded England.

HAMILTON, JAMES, third marquis, and first duke of Hamilton, was born in the palace at Hamilton, on the 19th of June, 1606.
His father, James, marquis of Hamilton, was held in high favour by James I., who, amongst other honours which he bestowed on him, created him earl of Cambridge, a title which was at an after period a fatal one to the unfortunate nobleman who is the subject of this memoir.
The duke’s head and body were placed in a coffin which lay ready on the scaffold, and conveyed to a house in the Mews, and afterwards, agreeably to his own directions before his death, conveyed to Scotland, and interred in the family burying ground.

Born at Hamilton, Lanarkshire, on 19 June 1606, the eldest son of James, 2nd Marquis of Hamilton, and Lady Anne Cunningham, daughter of the Earl of Glencairn.
Hamilton and Argyll were forced to flee from Edinburgh in October 1641 on the discovery of a muddled plot against them perpetrated by hot-headed Royalists (the "Incident").
Hamilton's renewed involvement in Scottish affairs caused a split between his own supporters and the hardline Covenanters led by Argyll, particularly over the terms of the Engagement that the King signed with the Scottish Commissioners in December 1647.

Hamilton became Regent on the death of King James V (1512 - 1542) and gained his French Duchy for negotiating the marriage of the young Mary, Queen of Scots (1542 - 1587) to the Dauphin of France (1549).
Hamilton's sympathies swayed between support for Queen Mary and the Protestant nobles who wished to see her removed, undoubtedly because he still hoped to fall heir to the throne.
