James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn, KG (January 21, 1811 - October 31, 1885) was a British Conservative nobleman and statesman who twice served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
James Hamilton (until 1814, by virtue of his father's courtesy viscountcy), Viscount Hamilton (1814–1818, while heir to the Marquessate of Abercorn), The Marquess of Abercorn (inherited in 1818), and finally The Duke of Abercorn (so created in 1868).
In 1844 Lord Abercorn was made a Knight of the Garter at the relatively young age of 33, becoming that same year Lord Lieutenant of County Donegal.

 The Barony of Duddingston
As “pin-money” her stepfather on her marriage presented her with Duddingston, but this stayed in the Argyll family only until her younger son, Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll, in 1745 sold the lands to James Hamilton, 8th Earl of Abercorn, for whom they were erected into a barony.
The nephew of the 8th Earl succeeded him and was in 1790 raised to the rank of a Marquess.
The Duddingston House in which she lived was replaced with a much larger mansion by the 8th Earl of Abercorn, but it is still possible to imagine the home she loved.
