James, 2nd Lord Hamilton, son of the 1st lord and Princess Mary, was created earl of Arran in 1503; and his son James, who was regent of Scotland from 1542 to 1554, received in February 1549 a grant of the duchy of Chfltellerault in Poitou.

JAMES DOUGLAS, 4th duke of Hamilton (1658-1712), eldest son of the preceding and of Duchess Anne, succeeded his mother, who resigned the dukedom to him in 1698, and at the accession of Queen Anne he was regarded as leader of the Scottish national party.

His successor, the second duke, continued the family tradition by being awarded the Garter in 1892; the third duke served as MP for Londonderry and as Governor of Northern Ireland, along with being created a Knight of St Patrick and given the Garter.

The 2nd duke having thus died without leaving male issue, the title devolved upon his niece, the Lady Anne Hamilton, eldest daughter of James, 1st duke, who marrying with Lord William Douglas, eldest son of the Marquis of Douglas, brought the titles and estates into that family.
The present duke of Hamilton, therefore, is the representative of the 1st duke in the female line.

James Albert Edward Hamilton, 3rd Duke of Abercorn (November 30, 1869 - September 12, 1953) was a British Unionist politician and nobleman who became the first Governor of Northern Ireland.
Born in London, the eldest son of James Hamilton, 2nd Duke of Abercorn, and godson of the Prince of Wales, he was educated at Eton and subsequently served with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and the 1st Life Guards.
After serving for a time as an Opposition whip, Hamilton succeeded his father as third Duke of Abercorn in 1913, and nine years later was appointed Governor of the newly-created Northern Ireland.

James Hamilton, 2nd Duke of Abercorn (24 August 1838 - 3 January 1913) was a British nobleman and diplomat.
Abercorn held several positions after acceding to that title, including Grandmaster of the Ireland Freemasons (1886), Groom of the Stole (1886–1891), Chairman of the British South Africa Company, and announced Edward VII's accession to the throne in 1901 to several countries as a Special Envoy.
Lord Arthur John Hamilton (1883-1914), who was Deputy Master of the Household from 1913 and gained the rank of Captain in service of the Irish Guards and was killed in action.
