James, 2nd Lord Hamilton, son of the 1st lord and Princess Mary, was created earl of Arran in 1503; and his son James, who was regent of Scotland from 1542 to 1554, received in February 1549 a grant of the duchy of Chfltellerault in Poitou.
At the pacification of Perth in 1573 the Hamiltons abandoned Marys cause, and a reconciliation with the Douglases was sealed by Lord Johns marriage with Margaret, daughter of the 7th Lord Glamis, a cousin of the regent Morton.
JAMES DOUGLAS, 4th duke of Hamilton (1658-1712), eldest son of the preceding and of Duchess Anne, succeeded his mother, who resigned the dukedom to him in 1698, and at the accession of Queen Anne he was regarded as leader of the Scottish national party.

Through his mother, Hamilton was the great grandson of James II of Scotland and on the death of James V of Scotland he stood next in line to the Scottish throne after the baby Mary Queen of Scots, for whom he was appointed Regent.
Initially a Protestant and a member of the pro-English party, in 1543 he was involved in negotiating the marriage of the Queen of Scots to the infant Prince Edward (the future Edward VI).
Hamilton changed allegiance again in 1559, joining the Protestant 'Lords of the Congregation' to oppose the regency of Mary of Guise, and losing his French dukedom as a result.

 Stuart, James, earl of Arran
Arran set out to crush his opponents in Scotland, driving the Protestant lords into exile and seizing their lands.
Arran's reckless use of power soon alienated his few supporters in Scotland, while his agent in England treacherously undermined the good relations that he had established initially with Elizabeth I. In 1585 the English queen accused Arran of the murder of Lord Francis Russell in a border fray.

Named after the French dukedom bestowed in 1549 upon James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran and Lord Governor of Scotland (d.1575), Châtelherault is one of the largest and most elegant hunting lodges in Britain.
Built between 1731 and 1743 by the 5th Duke of Hamilton (1703-43) to the designs of the celebrated architect, William Adam (1689-1748), Châtelherault occupies an elevated site in the High Parks, forming an eye-catching termination to the vista along the great south avenue from the palace, about 2.5km away.
However, plantation and enclosure work to the south of Châtelherault in 1750 included the provision of a large belvedere (pavilion from which to view the scenery), close to the highest point on the avenue which Edward had himself earlier identified.
