James Guthrie Harbord (March 21, 1866 – August 20, 1947) was a Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army and President and Chairman of the Board of RCA.
Harbord was born in Bloomington, Illinois, and raised in Bushong, Kansas and Manhattan, Kansas.
Harbord was also to report on Turkish-Armenian relations in the wake of the Armenian Genocide.

In May, 1918, Harbord was re-assigned by Pershing to the Marine Brigade of the 2d Infantry Division, and he and his men successfully halted the Germans at Belleau Wood (6-25 June, 1918).
Harbord was promoted major general, and commander of the 2d Division during the counterattacks on Soisson.
After the war, General Harbord was promoted to brigadier general in the Regular Army and again appointed Chief of Staff of the AEF, and on return to the U.S. as major general in 1919, commander of the 2d Infantry Division.

General Harbord was assigned the duty to investigate and observe the area assigned to the new Armenian State and report his findings to the Senate.
Harbord was bid farewell in the same sincere and proud manner that he was greeted by the people who had nothing to hide.

He was on the Mexican border with General John J. Pershing in 1916 and when the United States entered the European conflict he went to France as Pershing's chief of staff, which won him a promotion to brigadier general.
In August 1918 the necessity for greater efficiency in troop and supply movement became apparent and Harbord was recalled from the front and put in charge of supply.
In 1922 General Harbord retired from the army and assumed the presidency of the Radio Corporation of America.

James G. Harbord’s first visit to the birth place of Jeanne D’Arc occured on 1 August 1917 when he was a lieutenant colonel and General John Pershing’s Chief of Staff.
LtCol Harbord’s second visit to Domremy occured in early April of 1918, when Harbord was one of a small party accompanying the American Secretary of War Newton Baker on a tour of the American front line.
In May of 1918 Harbord, now a brigadier general, was given command of the 4th Brigade of Marines of the Second Division, and commanded them in the pivotal battle of Belleau Wood during June of 1918, where the German drive on Paris was brought to a standstill.

About 1500 on Tuesday, 16 July, Harbord was informed that his new division headquarters would be in the Forêt (Forest) de Retz, and that the French Tenth Army, to which his own division was now assigned, was contemplating an attack.
General Mangin was away from his headquarters, and Harbord had initially received no information on Mangin's intentions for the 2d Division except that it would be assigned to the French XX Corps.
Now, Harbord learned that the 2d Division, as part of XX Corps, was to attack on a wide front extending south from the vicinity of Soissons.

In the territory untouched by war from which Armenians were deported the ruined villages are undoubtedly due to Turkish deviltry, but where Armenians advanced and retired with the Russians their retaliatory cruelties unquestionably rivaled the Turks in their inhumanity.
While General Harbord deserves credit for acknowledging some crimes of the Armenians, it is most unimpressive that he decided to have downplay the crimes of the Armenians.

Harbord’s men were extremely pleased and from that time on earning their loyalty was easy sailing.
Undaunted, Harbord sponsored his campaign and publicized a letter from Bandholtz, who had enormous prestige in the area, designating Quezon as his man. When the time came to convene town officials for a vote, Harbord mobilized US Army trucks to carry his supporters to the provincial capital.

I propose to look for the evidence of the "slug of sediment" that should have gone down the James River following the capture of Valley and Ridge Drainage by the ancestral James River, as is suggested by my conceptual model of drainage development.
The profile of the James as taken from 1:24k maps has a number of irregularities.
I think that the significant drop in the profile upstream of the Cowpasture-Jackson confluence (head of the James) is a knickpoint that we also find in the Maury River (at Goshen Pass).
