		James Harvey Robinson, U.S. historian, was one of the founders of the "new history" that greatly broadened the scope of historical scholarship in relation to the social sciences.
		Robinson's interest in the new history stemmed from a course he began teaching (1904) on European intellectual history, the first of its kind and one that proved extremely popular among his graduate students.
		In 1919 Robinson resigned from Columbia and was prominent in the founding of the New School for Social Research in New York that same year.
