He was fascinated most of all by the slide trombone, an instrument which his father, a partner in the Fillmore Brothers religious music publishing business, considered too evil for any righteous person to play.

Henry James, at least as envisioned by Colm Tóibín in his new novel based on James' life, "The Master," belongs to the second category.
James famously described the ideal writer as someone "on whom nothing is lost," and he believed that the consummate observer must avoid calling attention to himself.
The Henry James imagined by Tóibín (the Irish novelist whose previous works include "The Blackwater Lightship," "The Story of the Night" and "The Heather Blazing") is just such a person.

Henry James's novella probes the social and emotional complications that follow the overly familiar but innocent behavior of Daisy Miller, a newly rich American traveling in Switzerland and Rome.
James focuses on two characters here--both Daisy and Winterbourne--and though the story is told from Winterbourne's point of view, Daisy is often the more vibrant of the two characters.
James drew Daisy with such a mixture of characteristics - innocence, sentimentality, straightforwardness, passivity - that it's easy for the reader to sympathize with her.

I am not a Henry James fanatic, as a matter of fact, this is the first work of his that I have read, and with that I must say that this novel is horribly written and completely unrealistic in it's portrayal of the child, Maisie and especially her dialogue.
James' prose is refreshingly complex - a true balm in these illiterate times - and his narrative bears his distinctive creative style.
Maisie is somewhat different in style from James' other works, but this is not a lapse in quality but rather a testament to his versatility as an author - he was not stuck in one particular mould.
