It seems James responded to news that she was dead in words to the effect of “How do you know?” A real question perhaps underlay the wit from a writer in whom ambivalence and ambiguity are typical.
Otherwise James came to wider fame in the late seventies as a light, witty realistic fiction-writer of some lucidity, dealing in meetings between the old world and the new, his moral exploration apt to be focused through an innocent American abroad.

His father, Henry James, Sr., was a noted Swedenborgian philosopher and man of letters, a friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Thomas Carlyle.
James won literary acclaim for his artistic devotion to the form of the novel, innovating the dramatic presentation of character and perfecting the technique of narrative "point of view." By the 1890s, however, his writings had begun to lose their popular appeal.
James maintained a warm friendship with Constance Fenimore Woolson, and some biographers have speculated that her suicide in 1894 was due to her inability to establish a reciprocal romantic relationship with James.
