James Hepburn succeeded in 1556 to his father's titles, lands and hereditary offices, including that of lord high admiral of Scotland.
He left no lawful descendants; but his nephew, Francis Stewart Hepburn, who, through his father, John Stewart, prior of Coldingham, was a grandson of King James V., and was thus related to Mary, queen of Scots, and the regent Murray, was in 1581 created earl of Bothwell.

This engraving was made for an edition of William Robertson's influential History of Scotland during the Reigns of Mary and James VI, which provided inspiration for a number of history painters in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
The scene depicted is of James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell 'abducting' Mary outside Edinburgh in April 1567, probably with her acquiescence and foreknowledge, as a prelude to their subsequent marriage.

One of the most colourful figures in Scottish history, Bothwell was educated by his grand-uncle, Bishop Hepburn of Moray and he succeeded his father as earl of Bothwell and hereditary lord high admiral of Scotland in 1556 at the age of 21.
He was also a member of the group which murdered David Rizzio, Mary's secretary, in Holyrood Palace in 1566, in the presence of Mary.
The future James VI was born a few months later.
