He was born in Montville, Connecticut, the son of William Hillhouse, and adopted by his childless uncle and aunt, James Abraham and Mary Lucas Hillhouse.
He graduated from Yale in 1773, and became a captain in the Revolutionary War.
He was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, 1780, United States Congressman from Connecticut at-large, 1791 - 96, and United States Senator from Connecticut, 1796 - 1810.

 Grove Street Cemetery
Hillhouse is known to have considered two possible solutions to the problem: the first was a private cemetery for himself and his family, but discarded the idea for the resting place might not remain in his family; this led to the second alternative, a new public burying ground for the city.
Thirtytwo prominent citizens raised the funds to purchase the property, but it is unknown whether Hillhouse was their agent or whether his initiative caused the formation of the association.
On assumption of the cemetery's debt, the unused portion of the cemetery was returned to James Hillhouse, exclusive of paths and alleyways, for him to sell and cover his expenditure.

James Hillhouse commanded the Governor's Foot Guard in New Haven during the American Revolution, became active in early American politics, and served as Yale's treasurer for fifty years.

Many of its great oak trees were planted by James Hillhouse (1754-1832) - the entrepreneur and civic leader responsible for the enactment of the first municipal tree ordinance in the United States.
In developing their extensive properties, James Hillhouse and his son, James Abraham, pursued a variety of innovative strategies, including the promoting of such public utilities as the Farmington Canal, the Hartford Turnpike, and the Grove Street Cemetery to enhance their value.
James Abraham Hillhouse's mansion, which stood on the site of Yale's Klein Tower, was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis and completed in 1830.

Oliver Hillhouse Prince (1823-1875), Jackson's son-in-law, was a Democratic newspaper editor deeply involved in Georgia politics in the 1840s, who became a large landholder and planter in Bibb and Baker Counties.
Henry Jackson's older brother James Jackson (1757-1806), a Revolutionary War general and political protege of William H. Crawford, served as a U.S. congressman from Georgia in the early 1790s, as governor of Georgia from 1798 to 1801, and as a U.S. senator from that state from 1801 until his death.
A Georgia planter and newspaper editor, Oliver Hillhouse Prince was born 16 March 1823 in Bibb County, the son of Oliver Hillhouse Prince (senior) and Mary Ross Norman Prince.

Mackall in 1878, the importing of a sculpted monument by Benedetto Civiletti in 1879 (see photographs in Series 6), and A. Lawton, Jr.'s 1882 marriage to Daisy Beckwith.
The plantation documented in the journal was at Blackswamp, near Robertville, in St. Peter's Parish, Beaufort District, S.C. Entries in the journal are concise, yet detailed, and describe activities on the plantation Lawton ran in cooperation with his father and then with his mother, on which they raised cotton, rice, and corn.

James Hillhouse could see that what he had to do was force all the debtors involved to make money.
Hillhouse had not only recovered all monies owing to Connecticut, but a half million besides.

Closer to home, Hillhouse was an effective treasurer and fundraiser for his alma mater Yale College, successfully soliciting funds from the Connecticut legislature and the network of Yale alumni beginning to fan across the growing nation.
Locally, Hillhouse arranged to have elm trees on his farm replanted in downtown New Haven, earning it the epithet "Elm City," and he established the Grove Street Cemetery, where he is buried.
