The 1st Baron Howard de Walden was raised to the rank of an earl, as Earl of Suffolk in 1603 shortly after the accession of King James I of England.
The barony Howard de Walden passed out of the family with the death of James Howard, 3rd Earl of Suffolk in 1688 without surviving sons, and fell into abeyance until it was called out of abeyance in 1784.

WILLIAM CAVENDISH, duke of Newcastle (1592-1676), eldest surviving son of Sir Charles Cavendish and of Catherine, daughter of Cuthbert, Lord Ogle, and grandson of Sir William Cavendish and Bess of Hardwick, was born in 1592 and educated at St Johns College, Cambridge.
On the 3rd of November 1620 he was created Viscount Mansfield, on the 7th of March 1628 earl of Newcastle, and in 1629 the barony of Ogle was restored to his mother, this title, together with an estate of 3ooo per annum, descending to him.
As earl of Lincoln he was first ommissioner of woods and forests from 1841 to February 1846, tfhen he was appointed chief secretary to the lord-lieutenant of Ireland, but the ministry fell in June of the same year.

The Earl Marshal of England is a hereditary Royal officeholder under the King or Queen of the United Kingdom.
In the Middle Ages, the Earl Marshal and the Lord High Constable were the officers of the King's horses and stables.
In conjunction with the Lord High Constable he had held a court, known as the Court of Chivalry, for the administration of justice in accordance with the law of arms, which was concerned with many subjects relating to military matters, such as ransom, booty and soldiers' wages, and including the misuse of armorial bearings.

The Howard family had been very important from the reign of Henry VIII until Thomas Howard was executed in 1572 for plotting to marry Mary, Queen of Scots.
Thomas Howard (Earl of Suffolk, 1603) was appointed Lord Chamberlain and then Lord Treasurer, while his namesake Thomas Howard (Earl of Arundel 1624) joined the Privy Council in 1616.
James commuted the sentence and - after some years of imprisonment - both were allowed to retire quietly to the country.

Earl Marschal (or Marischal) is an ancient chivalric title used separately in England, Scotland and Ireland.
The House of Lords Act 1999 removed the automatic right of hereditary peers to sit in the House of Lords, but the Act provided that the Earl Marshal and Lord Great Chamberlain be exempt from such a rule, so that they may continue to carry out their ceremonial functions in the House of Lords.
