James Hutchinson Woodworth (born: December 4, 1804 in Greenwich, New York; died: March 26, 1869; buried in Oak Woods Cemetery, Chicago, twice served as Mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1848-1850) for the Independent Democratic Party.
Woodworth arrived in Chicago in 1835 and applied for a wharfing privilege.

Woodworth differentiated plumose structures from slickensides and, contrary to Becker (1893, 1895), interpreted slickensides as secondary features caused by later shear displacement on some of the joint planes.
James explained that columns in the rapidly cooled upper part of a flow are long and thin, whereas columns in the slowly cooled lower part are short and thick.
Fracture surface textures, displacements across fractures, and the relative ages of joint sets as emphasized by Woodworth (1896), Swanson (1927), and Sheldon (1912a), respectively, were de-emphasized or neglected, and many joint studies relied primarily on geometric pattern recognition.

James Kinzie held a dominant proprietary interest in this addition, as shown by the following action taken by the Illinois General Assembly early in 1835: "An Act to authorize James Kenzie to alter the Town Plat of the town of Wabansie.
Late that year he, becoming superannuated, was succeeded by Rev. J.T. Mitchell and in 1835 removed to Walker`s Grove, dying on Oct. 5; the remains of his first wife were disinterred and buried with him in a single large coffin.
General Wayne`s portrait, by British pastelist James Sharples, Sr., was probably made in June 1796 before the commander left Philadelphia for his post in Detroit; acquired by the City of Philadelphia in 1875.
