John was betrothed to Christiana, daughter of the duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz; but when the princess's sister Charlotte was affianced to George III., reasons of state led to the rupture of the engagement, and he died unmarried on the 19th of March 1804.
The duke's library, including a unique collection of books from Caxton's press, and three rare volumes of broadside ballads, was sold in 1812, when the Roxburghe Club was founded to commemorate the sale of Valdarfer's edition of Boccaccio.
The duke of Roxburghe sits in the House of Lords as Earl Innes, a peerage of the United Kingdom, which was conferred in 1837 upon James Henry, the 6th duke (1816-1879).

The town stood on a defensible peninsula between the rivers Tweed and Teviot, with Roxburgh Castle guarding the narrow neck of the peninsula.
Roxburgh was born at Underwood in the parish of Craigie, Ayrshire.
In 1803 he received a second gold medal for a communication on the growth of trees in India, and on the 31st of May, 1814, was presented with a third, in the presence of a large assembly which he personally attended, by the duke of Norfolk, who was then president of the Society of Arts.

The 6th Marquess was married twice, the first time on April 14, 1793, to Henrietta, formerly the wife of the 1st Earl of Belmore, and daughter of the 2nd Earl of Buckinghamshire.
The family of the Duke of Roxburghe originally descended from the Kerrs of Cessford, but this branch of the family spelled their name Ker.
Sir James Innes, the 5th Duke of Roxburghe, who was born in 1736 and died in 1820, assumed the name of InnesKer in 1807.

James was the 6th Earl Innes and became 29th Laird of Innes on 7 February 1764.
In 1767 he sold the lands of Innes to the Earl of Fife and moved to England He adopted the name of Norcliffe some time after his first marriage in 1769. In 1805 the title of Duke of Roxburghe became available when the then Duke died without issue.
The case was settled by the House of Lords, who decided in favour of Sir James. In 1820 he made a record of his ancestry to show the Ker family that he was of as good blood.

In the words of the duke “Floors Castle has been home to my family and to my predecessors since the house was built by William Adam for the 1st Duke of Roxburghe in 1721.
The roof alterations by the 2nd Duke, the external remodeling by the 6th Duke and the interior modifications by the 8th Duchess are just some of the changes effected over the years.
Although remodelled by William Adam with a Georgian cove, the small size and massive walls indicate that this is one of the oldest parts of the Castle.
