  Encyclopedia: James Florio
James Joseph Florio (born August 29, 1937) was the Democratic Governor of the U.S. state of New Jersey from 1990 to 1994, the first Italian-American to hold the position.
In 1974, Florio was elected to the United States House of Representatives, and served from January 3, 1975 until January 16, 1990.
Florio served one four year term as Governor from January 16, 1990, to January 18, 1994 and was defeated for re-election primarily because he supported a substantial tax increase.

He is expected to spend $25 million on the primary race alone, a national record for a Senate primary, and 10 times the amount his competitor, former Gov. James J. Florio, is expected to spend.
On the other hand, just say the name "Florio" in some part of this state, and you are bound to evoke some emotions --- mostly, nearly always, negative emotions.
Though he has been out of the governor's mansion for years, anytime Florio's name graces a newspaper, it is usually followed by a mention of his signature $2.8-billion tax hike.

Former New Jersey Governor James J. Florio spoke to an appreciative audience of nearly fifty persons at a program jointly sponsored by ESPA and Auto-Free New York on Tuesday, December 19, 2000.  Auto-Free New York is an advocacy group seeking to reduce car use in New York City.
Florio made a strong case for investing in intercity rail passenger service to relieve overcrowded airways and highways.  He also explained how intercity rail can help to revive central cities and small towns, promote tourism, and provide an attractive alternative to auto travel for those persons who have difficulty driving long distances.
Florio urged the assembled advocates to not just preach to the converted, but take their case to civic and business groups who could be enlisted in the cause for advancing intercity rail.

A combination of lots of money and strong political skills would be hard for Florio to overcome, but first- time candidates in big-time races have a track record of self- destruction--witness the failure of Republican Pete Dawkins in his race against Lautenberg in 1988.
If voters are reminded of some of the more controversial elements of the Florio administration, or if Corzine gets tripped up on his business record or fails to demonstrate a grasp of public policy issues, the Democratic candidate could become the issue.

Former Gov. James J. Florio appointed him to the bench in 1991.
Florio appointed her to the bench in 1993 and immediately upon being sworn in to the Tax Court, she was temporarily assigned to the Family Division of Superior Court in Gloucester County.

TRENTON, New Jersey - Gov. James E. McGreevey outlined an ambitious environmental agenda as a candidate last year, vowing to curb sprawling development, set strict pollution limits, protect drinking water, improve air quality and increase enforcement of environmental laws.
DEP Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell said the latter proposal, in some cases, would bar development of land miles away from reservoirs, if it could be proved that a feeder stream would be polluted by a development.
Chris James, past president of the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association, which has nearly 300 members with landscape, lawn care and irrigation businesses, criticized Campbell's response to the drought.

A day after Republican Senator John J. Matheussen's decision to leave the Senate to head up the Delaware River Port Authority, Frederick H. Madden, the acting superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, announced that he would run as a Democrat for Matheussen's seat.
Two prominent Democrats who had been mulling runs, Assemblyman Robert J. Smith II (D-Washington Township) and Gloucester County Clerk James Hogan, both said they would cede the nomination to Madden.
Republicans also poked at the assertion of Camden County Democratic Co-Chairman James Beach that having Madden as a candidate would be "the equivalent of running Elliot Ness."
