Walker was a native New Yorker, born in 1881.
Walker had a great fondness for boxing and was often seen at ringside at major New York fights.

Although Walker held moderate views on slavery, his stand that the citizens of Kansas should be left free to choose to have slavery or not was regarded as a betrayal by Democratic party leaders, who were committed to make Kansas a slave state.
Walker's greatest work was the preparation of the famous Treasury report of December 3, 1845.
Walker at first opposed the Compromise of 1850, but was won over later by the arguments of Stephen A. Douglas.

Walker's fortunes turned downward, with the economy (due to the stock-market crash of 1929).

Walker personified the city's rebellious attitude against social restriction in an era that began with the passage in 1919 of the Volstead Act, which enforced the national ban on the sale (but not the private consumption) of alcohol.
Walker refused to testify, an action that was widely regarded as being tantamount to a confession of guilt.
Ordered by Roosevelt to be more forthcoming, Walker managed to avoid being recalled until after the Democratic convention, held that summer in Chicago, where he openly supported Al Smith against the governor, who got the presidential nomination anyway (and would, of course, go on to win the first of his four national campaigns).

A "D. Walker" died in 1799, age 82, and Daniel Walker does not appear in the 1800 Census.
