James tried to study other still photographs of war, but found that the majority of them were glossed-over studies of glory rather than realistic portrayals of the grim nature of battle.
In keeping with James' desire to capture the humanity within the chaos of the battle, Hanks is often photographed with a pensive look on his face instead of the fierce scowl of a plastic action figure.
James' photographs, too, leave little to the imagination when it comes to showing the full brutality of combat, but James is quick to defend his work.

Early in his career James Madison wrote Edmund Randolph that he wanted "to depend as little as possible on the labor of slaves."18 Forced to abandon his efforts to live free of slavery and the plantation system in the 1790's, Madison continued to do what he could to lessen its degradations and harshness.
James Madison was reluctant to go through with the transaction; it "gave him much trouble."32 He did so only because the sale was to a family member, William Taylor, and he had the consent of the slaves involved.
James Madison responded by pointing out that slavery was the cause of the South's economic woes; slavery led to poor farming practices and the exploitative development of lands.

The Book of James: William James’s lectures on religion, a century later
James recounts scores of examples in his book; at least a third of his lectures retell and analyze stories of conversion and saintliness.
James showed little patience for what he considered self-absorbed piety: He was most impressed by believers whose experience of God rescued them from destructive lifestyles and launched them into acts of service.
“The saints, with their extravagance of human tenderness, are the great torch-bearers of this belief, the tip of the wedge, the clearers of the darkness.” In the end, it seems, James reached a generous judgment of religion—not in spite of his hard-nosed scholarship, but because of it.
