Kirk gained a tremendous amount of experience aboard the Farragut, commanding his first planet survey and also surviving a deadly attack by a gas cloud alien, in which a large portion of the Farragut's crew (including Captain Garrovick) were killed.

Kirk and his officers were charged with nine violations of Starfleet regulations and subsequently subjected to a court martial for their actions in appropriating the Enterprise, but in light of their actions all charges where dismissed with the exception of one charge against Admiral Kirk, of disobeying a superior officer.

Kirk was declared dead once during the five-year mission when another constitution class starship, the USS Defiant, was trapped in a spacial interphase.
Kirk took back command of the Starship Enterprise, after it's two year refit, but a clash between Will Decker, the man who was put in command of the Enterprise at Kirk's reccomendation, put the two at odds, which became tense especially when Decker was made first officer.

After his sloppy death in the movie Star Trek: Generations—when our hero was smashed on the side of a cliff—many fans were angered at the fact that his death was basically meaningless to the story.
The idea of James T. Kirk ending up falling off a bridge and splatting on the base of a mountain has boggled the minds of Trek fans for years.
But until the day when books become part of Trek canon, for Kirk's return to be official, it must be on screen.
