King James Version of the Bible - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In May 1601 King James VI of Scotland attended the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland at St. Columba's Church in Burntisland, Fife, and proposals were put forward for a new translation of the Bible into English.
The King James Version, as it was meant for dissemination among the ordinary man and to be read by preachers to their congregations, could not afford the luxury of using such a technique.
King James gave the translators instructions, which were designed to discourage polemical notes, and to guarantee that the new version would conform to the ecclesiology of the Church of England.

Doelman - The accession of King James I and English religious poetry
James is not explicitly named here, but as he is the dedicatee of the poem, surely the passage points to him.
Some poets continued to direct works of religious verse to James, but those of later years generally lacked the optimism that lavish patronage would be forthcoming, and the naivete that their versifying on God, the church, and the soul, would fulfill James's taste for theological complexity.
However, James did direct and shape other aspects of religious culture, notably the translation of the Bible which he commissioned, and in the area of theological disputes, particularly the ongoing debate with Catholic scholars over the Oath of Allegiance which he required his subjects to take.

Notes on the King James Translation
And of course between the King James and the more modern translations there is also the gap caused by the change in the English language itself -- we don't speak like the people in Shakespeare's time did, but their way of speaking is no "grander" or any more "eloquent" than ours.
King James English was the way any farmer or fisherman of 1611 would have talked, just as Today's English Version or the New International Version is close to the way an average person speaks today.
