James LaBrie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Kevin James LaBrie (born May 5, 1963) is a Canadian vocalist who is best known as the lead singer in progressive metal band Dream Theater.
By his mid-teens, LaBrie was a member of several bands as a singer and/or drummer, and in 1981, at age 18, he moved to Toronto to further his musical pursuits.
LaBrie has a studio vocal range of about three octaves, though the fact that since his vocal recovery he has been able to hit the high and low notes with full force suggests that his actual range might be considerably larger.

James LaBrie : Elements of Persuasion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Matt Guillory, LaBrie’s co-writer on 90% of the album (Brian Wherry, a non-member, also wrote, contributing to five songs), is a big part of the torrid success of one of the album’s very few mellow tracks, the moody and murky Lost.
And as with much of LaBrie’s solo work, there is a hypnotic, linear, almost doomy quality to the proceedings, enigmatically iced with Guillory’s ear candy, even if James and his band never lose sight of the fact that their chemistry is one of front-edge neo-progressive metal chops.
LaBrie feels so strongly about Elements Of Persuasion, that he will be taking it on the road, offering select US dates and a considerable tour of Europe, Swedish masters Evergrey in tow.

JAMES LABRIE Elements Of Persuasion reviews and MP3
LaBrie is the consummate rock vocalist on the gritty driving opener “Crucify” and the powerful “Freak.” He turns in a tasteful performance on the slightly softer rocker “Slightly Out Of Reach.” He rocks on all the tracks, just in varying degrees.
LaBrie had occasionally ventured out from the confines of his band, such as his side projects like Mullmuzzler and recently as the most prominent guest vocalist on Ayreon's blockbuster new rock opera The Human Equation but this is his first solo album in his name.
Labrie has delivered one of his best albums so far (perhaps even his best), and full credit has to be given to him, because of his own vocal talent, his choice of musicians, his strong compositions and the variation on the album.

Kevin James Labrie was born on May 5, 1963 in Penetanguishene, a town in Ontario, Canada.
Inspired by his father, James started singing and playing drums at age 5: "My parents say I was tapping on everything so if they didn't get me a drum set, I'd ruin the house!" By the age of ten, he was performing in a barber shop quartet with his father, uncle and brother.
James' musical tastes are quite varied as he names Metallica, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Journey and Judas Priest as well as classical composers Mozart, Vivaldi and Beethoven as favorites.

 MAGNA CARTA RECORDS > Reviews > MULLMUZZLER 2 - James LaBrie's Mullmuzzler
There is a remarkable diversity in the 10 tracks as LaBrie tries to distance himself somewhat from his main meal ticket Dream Theater while at the same time trying not to alienate those who will tune into this CD because of his affiliation with that band.
LaBries voice is front and center on this track as there is only minimal instrumentation and he pulls it off perfectly.
James LaBrie is the lead singer for Dream Theater, and if you don't get out much, DT is one of the best prog / metal bands out there today.

MAGNA CARTA RECORDS > Artists > JAMES LaBRIE'S MULLMUZZLER
James LaBrie's powerplant of players has convened once more for an album that is a rainbow of expressions stridently apart from the man's vocal and lyrical mastery emanating from the man's work with Dream Theater.
LaBrie has tapped deep emotional wells within this record, expanding on the themes of communication and the lack thereof that he handled so well on Keep It To Yourself, while setting these sincere confrontations with the self to musical soundtracks that are lush, melodic, and wholly committed, in two cases, to the concept of ballad.
Keneally is indeed yet another deadly weapon on Mullmuzzler 2, matching LaBrie's versatility with a bewildering selection of styles, aggressions and seldom heard guitar tones, underscoring the record's fierce creativity, a work ethic that bubbles and boils and roils beneath these elegant wide-angled tracks.

On Elements of Persuasion James surrounds himself once again with world-class musicians and describes the sound on E.O.P. as effectively traversing the distance between the moody and atmospheric and heavy and experimental.
Don't be fooled, this is not a James LaBrie solo concerto, it is merely that the movements and musical direction are led by him.
Labrie strikes out on his own finally and proves he's a phenominon of the Progressive metal community.

I'm not a huge fan of James because I find his voice can get very irritating after a while, but this CD really rocks and is definitely worth a buy.
But it is clear that he is a vital part of the glue that holds DT together, and an excellent songwriter in his own right.
There is no need to compare this CD with DT, it is James LaBrie´s and it´s a very good solo album.

I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, because I didn’t realize the history of the man, but what started off as a nice acoustic guitar solo soon transitioned into a hard rock/heavy metal record ala Metallica or Korn.
