James Langley Dalton, VC (1833 – January 7 1887) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 22 January, 1879, at Rorke's Drift, Natal, South Africa, Acting Assistant Commissary Dalton actively superintended the work of defence and was amongst the foremost of those who received the first attack at the comer of the hospital, where the deadliness of his fire checked the mad rush of the enemy.
Dalton was not originally named among the VC recipients, eventually receiving his medal in January 1880.

James Langley Dalton was awarded the VC for superintending the work of defence at Rorke’s Drift and was amongst those receiving the first wave of attack, where he saved the life of a man by killing the Zulu assailant.
Dalton, farmer and stock-raiser, P.O. Corry, was born in Cloneen, County Kilkenny,Ireland, July 13, 1826; son of Peter and Anna (Durney) Dalton, the former of whom died in Ireland in 1837, aged fifty-two years, and the latter in Pennsylvania in 1871, aged seventy-three years.
E.D. Dalton are the parents of six children— Anna, widow of Thomas Bates; Joanna, wife of Addison Patterson; Peter (deceased), Stachie, Mary (deceased), and James, married to Estella Kennedy, of Wayne.

He is buried in the Russell Road Roman Catholic Cemetery with a memorial, Plot E. On our visit to Port Elizabeth we went to Dalton's grave in the Russell Road Cemetery.
We took in many of the interesting sites, including the only statue erected to a horse, through a guided tour by a taxi driver who happened to be a descendent of an original settler.
James Dalton was born in London in 1833.

Moreover, we're inclined to think of noncombatant support troops like Commissary Dalton as "civilians in uniform" when in actuality they were likely to be hardened military veterans "double-dipping" in secondary careers (when they weren't active-duty NCOs or commissioned officers seconded to support functions).

Commanding a company-strength was Lieutenant Bromhead of the 24th Regiment.* James Langley Dalton, a volunteer serving as an Acting Assistant Commissary and a former Staff Sergeant, ordered the construction of barricades connecting the two buildings with sacks of corn, and an inner barricade with biscuit boxes.
When the Zulus attacked, wielding their short stabbing assegais, they were unable to reach the men behind the barricades and they were blasted by rifle fire at point blank range.
In the yard Surgeon James Henry Reynolds tended to the wounded, oblivious to the life and death struggle going on all around him.

James Langley is buried in the cemetery, at Glencoe, Minnesota and his white civil war headstone carries the civil war head stone shield with all the identification of the 1st Regiment Company B of Maine Volunteers Hvy Artly.
James later moved to Sumpter, Minnesota, where he homesteaded and died at age 26 from after effects of illnesses received while in the civil war.

To visit the graves of the VC recipients allows one to make some contact with the participants of this historic event.
My interest with the individuals involved led me to visit the graves of all the VC winners of Rorke's Drift who are buried in this country, as well as the grave of Dalton in South Africa whilst on our visit to Rorke's Drift.
You will also see that there are sections for other interesting aspects of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, as it is very difficult to remain specialised!

One grave that has been kept in reasonable repair is that of James Langley Dalton who was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery at Rorke’s Drift in January 1879.
Designed by GW Smith, the Home was opened on 9 August 1898 by the Mayor, M Gumpert and could accommodate 12 destitute children.
