In defence of James Lavelle | Music | Guardian Unlimited
Lavelle himself will probably concur that he was always a divisive character but the manner in which he was censured said more about the insidious quality of much of Her Majesty's music press than it did Lavelle himself.
Lavelle was definitely over-hyped to begin with and is perhaps now unfairly dismissed, but then if you live by the hype you die by it and Lavelle clearly did.
Lavelle was more of a British Puff Daddy than the Beastie Boys: a skilled promoter and businessman with a knack for producing the right people but when it came to the crunch, not very talented on his own.

James Lavelle started Mo' Wax, a very influential early electronic record label when he was 18 years old as well as inventing the type of music known as "Trip Hop", Hip Hop on acid, you might say.
seeing james lavelle hangin around on the cover of a GU cd was too intreresting to pass up tho, as i am a big fan of unkle and mo' wax in general.
Caroline Lavelle blends wonderfully her past experiences with electronics (William Orbit, Hector Zazou) and her ability as a celloist and composer in this album, balancing between pop influences and a deep passionate sound of strings and vocals.

 MySpace.com - James Lavelle - UK - www.myspace.com/djjameslavelle
Described once as the Hunter S. Thompson of DJs, James Lavelle’s career has spanned the last 18 years, and at 32 he remains as individual a figure in contemporary music as he was as a teenager, when he first gate-crashed his way in with the genre-shattering MoWax records.
Contrary to the mis-quote “I wanted to be a DJ because I couldn’t breakdance”, the true reason James chose this path was through ultimately trying to find an identity in the oppressive, non-encouraging music culture of eighties England, which he found through DJing and the whole package of Hip Hop (breakdancing, art and image).
Lavelle hung out with fellow-travellers all over the world: Nigo and MoWax signings Major Force in Tokyo, Massive Attack in the UK, and the Beastie Boys in New York to name a few.

James Lavelle: GU #026: Romania - PopMatters Music Review
Lavelle the globetrotting DJ has clearly arrived, and he's at the forefront of a growing and long overdue movement among club jocks to construct sets that bid the genre purists a hearty "fuck you".
Lavelle establishes right from the get-go that his is no ordinary Night at the Roxbury, dispensing with dance music's conventional electronics and four-on-the-floor beats in favor of a big, noisy, balls-out remix of Queens of the Stone Age's "No One Knows", produced by Lavelle himself and new U.N.K.L.E. cohort Richard File.
Credit James Lavelle with being one of the forces to jump-start what now appears to be -- hopefully, maybe, lord willing -- a dance music Renaissance that will see newer, weirder, and more exciting combinations of sounds dropping soon at a club near you.

James Lavelle & James Holden @ Spider club
Needless to say, we were pleased indeed to see that he and fellow Brit, James Holden, would be coming out to get raw with LA in the exclusive and much lauded Spider Club on July 22, for the Romania release party for Los Angeles.
Lavelle went on first and played some of his better known remixes and some newer hip-hop-ish material.
Lavelle’s focus in the beginning was not to impress with mixing prowess, but instead to smash like a rock star, playing cuts that you would definitely call “songs” rather than “tracks”, if that comparison makes sense.

 CMT.com : James Lavelle : Biography
Although not as prolific as other Mo'Wax artists such as DJs Shadow and Krush, Lavelle's group nonetheless played a crucial role in cementing Mo'Wax's early sound though their Time Has Come double EP, the latter of which featured remixes of the title track by Plaid, Portishead, and U2 producer Howie B.
The group comprises the trio of Lavelle, Tim Goldsworthy -- a mate of Lavelle's since childhood -- and producer Kudo, of seminal Japanese label Major Force (and a member of the on-again, off-again psychedelic beat crew Skylab).
While Goldsworthy and Kudo remain more heavily involved in nuts'n'bolts production (especially given the success of Mo'Wax, with Lavelle penning an expansive partial ownership deal with A&M Records in 1996), Lavelle is heavily involved in the conceptual and organizational end, crafting beats and laying out vague sketches his partners then expand into full-blown tracks.

The stacks of records that spanned the endless genres seemed to be absorbed into the downtempo and instrumental hip-hop releases that label head James Lavelle was uncovering at that time and releasing on his Mo’Wax label.
The artists featured on the Mo’Wax label deserve much of the credit for this widely influential direction as well, but it was Lavelle’s vision, DJ philosophy, and marketing that gave an outlet to a wide roster of deserving artists.
I’d hate to use the taste maker term, but Lavelle knew the best tracks when he found them and by combining the releases with art work featuring acclaimed visual artists such as Futura 2000, he steered a worldwide focus onto this brand of contemporary urban music.

Conceived in his Oxford, England hometown as a teenager, James Lavelle formed UNKLE as a side project with friends Masayuki Kudo of Major Force West and Tim Goldsworthy to explore new musical and conceptual frontiers.
Over a three year period, Lavelle successfully persuaded an eclectic collection of vocalists and musicians to lend their time and support for the project, culminating in a mix of genres including jazz, hip-hop, drum & bass, and rock cooked up by Shadow.
Between the dozen-or-so guest musicians and the presence of DJ Shadow in the studio, the pedigree of this record is very impressive.

One of the unfortunate side effects of James Lavelle's conversion from genre-crafting label head to superstar DJ is the fact that his once lauded UNKLE musical project has been sidelined, with its Never, Never, Land album being completely overlooked by both music press and fans.
But never one to let the scene landscape dictate his terms, Lavelle simply plays his strongest hand, filling his second globetrotting DJ set for Global Underground with ten carnations of his UNKLE muse, either with production or remix credits.
In addition, Lavelle utilizes his pro-tools DJ chops to handsomely edit down Plastikman, among others, meaning that there is virtually no piece on this double-disc set untouched by Lavelle's hand.
