Orr, with Stephen A. Douglas and others, addressed a Democratic meeting in Philadelphia, taking a strong stand against the Know-Nothing party, and is said by his arguments to have prevented many public men from joining its ranks.
Orr removed to New York, wood-engraving was but little used, but by advertising extensively, engaging the best assistants he could procure, and by introducing new inventions, he placed his establishment in the front rank in his profession, which position it retained for more than a quarter of a century.
Orr was an active member of the society of Odd Fellows, and from 1862 till 1871 edited and published "The American Odd Fellow," the official organ of that order.

James Lawrence Orr (May 12, 1822 – May 5, 1873) was an American politician who served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives in the United States Congress.
Congressman Orr was an advocate of States rights who used his position of power to assist those persons who promoted the continuation of slavery.
At the end of the war, Orr was elected governor in 1865 of the state of South Carolina and served until 1868 with the passage of a new state constitution.

Christopher Orr moved to Anderson in 1830 and operated a mercantile establishment.  His son, James Lawrence, aided his father at the store while he was not busy with his studies at the Anderson academy.
James L. Orr attended the University of Virginia, which he entered at the age of 17.  He first took a literary course and them studied law, upon the completion of which in 1943 [sic], he was admitted to the bar and began the practice of his profession soon afterward in Anderson.
Harry A. Orr, manager of the Charlotte branch of the Southern Public Utilities company, is a grandson of the late Judge Orr.  Another grandson, Marshall P. Orr, is president of the Orr Cotton Mills of Anderson.

He was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1844 to 1848, the U.S. House of Representatives from 1849 to 1859 (Speaker in 1857 and 1858), the 1851 Southern Rights Convention, the South Carolina delegation to the Democratic National Conventions of 1856 and 1860, and the South Carolina Secession Convention of 1860.

Thought by some to be a Unionist, Orr favored an armistice by 1863, but throughout the war he was "a benevolent friend in Richmond" to the South Carolina soldiers in the field He was the state's first post-war governor While serving as U.S. envoy to Russsia in 1872, he died of pneumonia in St Petersburg.
Orr spoke against secession for many years, believing it would bring ruin and desolation to the state, but when the movement became too strong to stop, his desire for unity in the state overcame his national loyalty.  On December 20, 1860, Orr signed the Secession Ordinance.
Following the death of Gregg at Fredericksburg, the brigade was assigned to Samuel McGowan.  It comprised Orr's Rifles and the lst, 12th, 13th and 14th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiments.  The regiments served together from the Seven Days to Appomattox.
