Levine is currently Music Director Designate of the orchestra; he will become Music Director in 2004-05 for an initial five-year commitment, leading the BSO in approximately twelve weeks of its twenty-three-week subscription season as well as three weeks or more at Tanglewood.
Levine inaugurated the "Metropolitan Opera Presents" television series for PBS in 1977, founded the Young Artist Development Program in 1980, returned Wagner's complete Ring des Nibelungen to the repertoire (in the first integral cycles in fifty years there) in 1989, and reinstated recitals and concerts with Met artists at the opera house--a former Metropolitan tradition.
Levine's activities are characterized by his intensive and enduring relationships with Europe's most distinguished musical organizations, especially the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the summer festivals in Salzburg (1975-1993) and Bayreuth (1982-1998).

I've heard nothing but acclaim for James Levine's appointment as music director of the Boston Symphony and was thrilled to hear the news myself.
Levine can build an orchestra, because we've heard him do it at the Metropolitan Opera, where he's been in charge since 1973, first as principal conductor, then with titles escalating all the way to his present post, artistic director.
Levine, it's been reported, wouldn't take the Boston job unless he was allowed to rearrange rehearsal time, so he'd get more of it in weeks when he conducts difficult scores.

The names Kissin and Levine assured a sold-out hall for three works which were probably new to most of the audience, but which figure among the greatest music ever written for the keyboard.
His tempo was fearlessly slow, even dangerously so — but Levine, with unshakably steady octaves in the bass, maintained the regularity of the pulse and thus preserved the music's processional character.
In the unfolding of the haunting second theme, the delicacy of Levine's figurations high in the treble and Kissin's incisiveness in the middle register and low octaves captured the diaphanous textures perfectly.
