James Lick donated the free use of a block of land that he owned on Montgomery Street between Sutter and Post.
The funds from James Lick's $10,000 bequest to the Institute received from his estate in 1883, were utilized for the purchase of technical and scientific books.
James Lick, a Pennsylvania Dutchman who had died on October 1, 1876 is remembered today in a bronze plaque located in the Lobby of the Institute building.

James might have settled into an unremarkable existence in Stumpstown, working the family farm and building fine cedar chests for the local trade, but, at the age of 21, an ill- starred romance changed the course of his life.
Even the conservative Lick was infected with gold fever, but a week in the mud of the gold fields convinced him that his future lay not in the glittering metal beneath the soil but in the land itself.
Lick's infirmity forced him to move to a room in his San Francisco hotel, where he could be more easily cared for.

 Building of Lick Observatory
Shortly before his death in 1876, James Lick, an adopted son of California and one of the state's wealthiest citizens, put his name on a deed of trust which, among other bequests, designated a sum of money for the construction of a telescope "superior to and more powerful" than any yet made.
Lick's deed of trust did not spell out the details of the new observatory, leaving the Board of Trust great latitude and a great burden of responsibility in carrying out his wishes.
Lick was immediately impressed by the younger man, and the following year, to Floyd's surprise, appointed him to head Lick's second Board of Trust.

James Lick took a personal interest in evaluating various sites for the location of his observatory but the final decision in favor of Mount Hamilton, located east of San Jose, in the Diablo Mountain Range, was made by Thomas Fraser, James Lick's foreman at the Lick homestead, and close associate.
The 36-inch lens for the Lick refractor was cast by a firm headed by Charles Feil, of Paris, France, and ground by the American firm of Alvan Clark, the premier telescope-making firm in the United States.

I suggest James, as James Lick was a prominent Californian/benefactor in the 19th century, and thus we have James Lick schools, James Lick freeway, and the Lick Observatory.
Lick is tough to work with- but you should be okay.
Lick is a very short name and to balance it out I think you need a longer first name.

As the librarian at James Lick High School, I was excited about the opportunity to partner with the staff at the new Roberto Cruz/Alum Rock library and to let you know how wonderful Nora Conte and the entire staff have been to our students and staff.
All of us at James Lick are so grateful to have our new neighborhood library up and running and to have such wonderful librarians as a resource.
James Lick has had a wonderful year so far due to a consistent Administration (thanks to Superintendent Bob Nunez) and a dedicated staff, and we look forward to moving our students even further in the upcoming months.
