  James Lorimer Ilsley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Lorimer Ilsley, PC (January 3, 1894 – January 14, 1967) was a Canadian politician and jurist.
Ilsley practiced law in Halifax, Nova Scotia until he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as a Liberal in the 1926 election.
Today J.L. Ilsley High School, opened in 1971 and located in Spryfield, Nova Scotia, bears his name.

Educated at Acadia and Dalhousie, Ilsley practised law until his election to Parliament as a Liberal in 1926.
Deeply disappointed, Ilsley became minister of justice in 1946, but retired to practise law in 1948.

James Barry Munnik Hertzog, the prime minister of South Africa, was more impatient: he threatened to leave the Commonwealth if the conference refused to draft a declaration that would affirm the independent status of the dominions.
He lured James Layton Ralston, a prominent Nova Scotia Liberal, back into politics, first as minister of finance (to replace Dunning) and then as minister of national defence, where his presence and his concern for enlisted men, dating back to the Great War, were reassuring to Canadian servicemen.
Ilsley argued that concession would encourage other appeals, but King insisted that the program would not survive if it was too inflexible and eventually Ilsley gave way.

The minister of national defence, James Layton Ralston*, told the prime minister in October that conscript reinforcements must be sent immediately.
In December 1947 St-Laurent supported American attempts within the UN to establish a stable regime in South Korea through elections, and he recommended to the cabinet the appointment of a Canadian to a UN committee to study the subject.
The appointment had actually been approved by J. Ilsley, now the minister of justice, who was interim head of the Canadian delegation at the UN in New York City at the time, but St-Laurent and his staff saw no reason to object.
