Star Wars: Hyperspace | James Luceno Online Chat
James Luceno was one of the planners, along with other authors and editors, that helped shape the epic storyline.
Luceno is currently on the road on a book tour for The Unifying Force, but has freed up some time to talk with Hyperspace members about his contributions to the Star Wars expanded universe.
Luceno's other Star Wars novels include the Agents of Chaos duology (Hero's Trial and Jedi Eclipse), Cloak of Deception, and Darth Maul: Saboteur eBook.

Cloak of Deception (Star Wars): Current Amazon U.S.A. One-Edition Data
James Luceno is as well written as his previous offerings, however it is very different.
Luceno has done a great job of keeping the reader guessing on exactly what the eventual goal of the plot being hatched by dissidents really is. Of course it turns out that Sidious has been orchestrating things very far in advance.
James Luceno has done well here, better than those awful New Jedi Order 'books', it's painfully obvious in this novel that he has used the NJO map, but I guess no book can be perfect.

Star Wars: Darth Maul: Saboteur by James Luceno - The Dark Spiral   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Luceno paints a crystal clear picture for any reader to see, and Darth Maul's plan of action to sabotage competeing mining organizations is interesting to watch unfold.
James Luceno is one of my favorite Star Wars author, but really, this tale falls flat.
Many parts of the story drag on for too long, and even though Darth Maul's name appears in the title of the story, his role isn't as big as it should be.

One sad part of the entire story is that the things that James Luceno thought were required to make the story stand on its own are precisely the things which have brought him such derision.
Luceno's ability to construct interesting events (Max's brawl in the alley being one) are wonderful, in my view.
Luceno is not a bad guy, and in fact, not that bad a writer.

I have never read anything else by Luceno so I did not know what to expect, but he failed miserably to impress my very open mind.
Luceno uses the very valuable potential of several great Clone Wars characters that are otherwise very under-recognized, and again failed to take advantage of their possibilities.
This book was very dull through and through, and I would have given t only 1 star if it were not for one very exciting duel.

 Cinescape - Home - Editorial
James Luceno is most identified with books that don’t even bare his name.
Luceno has a real talent for creating snappy, kinetic text that jumps off the page, no matter the age of the reader.
The barrier fences off corporate controlled sections of the net from anarchic sections, called “the Wilds.” The “Escarpment” was previously thought to be unassailable, and many covert heavyweights would do anything to get their hands on the piece of code that Tech composed in order to make the unprecedented move.

Inlibris Bookstore - Labyrinth of Evil (Star Wars, Episode III Prequel Novel) by James Luceno
Author James Luceno returns to the prequel biz with Star Wars: Labyrinth of Evil, a novel sure to be required reading for die-hard fans of George Lucas's galaxy far, far away.
Written with Lucas's blessing, Luceno's tale leads right to the opening sequence of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, setting the stage for the fiery conclusion of the Clone Wars and the rise of the Empire.
While essential for obsessive fans, Labyrinth of Evil is a clunky novel and Luceno struggles with Lucas's ungainly and Byzantine plotting.

But what sets Cloak of Deception (written by James Luceno) apart from the other novels is that it is very much a political story and not so much an action/adventure tale that you're used to.
Cloak of Deception centers around the mysterious assassination attempt on the life of the Supreme Chancellor Valorum, and the strange ferocity of the Nebula Front group that is currently at odds with the Trade Federation.
What was interesting about this political tale, is that Luceno delves more into the mind and personality of Valorum; a character that had little to no screen time in The Phantom Menace.

Review: James Luceno is a good author as far as action sequences go, and fairly good on the emotions, specifically Han's feelings regarding the death of Chewbacca.
On a whole, the overall plot is good, and not all of the non-action parts are horrible.

It's not the best book of the New Jedi Order series, I'd like to see more Jedi, and more non-human characters involved, but the series is fast paced and exciting and always leaves you wondering how the heroes of old are going to cope.

That surprised me, because usually Lucasfilm usually keeps pretty good track of that sort of thing, and Luceno, as one half of the pseudonymous Jack McKinney that wrote the Robotech novels, knows a thing or two about papering over continuity problems.
I wonder if the opening crawl has been changed, or if Luceno based his book on an out of date plot outline.
