James Madison was born at Port Conway, Va., 10 March 1751, and graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) in 1771.
Madison served in the House 1789-97 and proposed the first 10 amendments to the Constitution which became the Bill of Rights.

The Ethan Allen class of fleet ballistic missile submarine was an evolutionary development from the George Washington class.
Together with the George Washington, the Lafayette, the James Madison, and the Benjamin Franklin classes, they comprised the "41 for Freedom."
Rather than being designed as Skipjack-class attack submarines with a missile compartment added, the Ethan Allens were designed from scratch as fleet ballistic missile submarines carrying the Polaris A-2 missile.

James Madison was decommissioned on 20 November 1992 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 20 November 1992.

The introduction of the Polaris A-3 class of submarine in the Holy Loch increased the complexity of maintaining and supplying the Squadron.
Submarine Squadron Fourteen and permanently assigned units have been awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation for exceptional performance of assigned missions in 1975, 1983 and 1987.

The Vanguard Class was designed from the outset as a nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine, unlike the previous Resolution class which was adapted from the then existing Valiant class SSN.
In addition to the missile tubes the Vanguard class is fitted with four 533 mm (21 inch) torpedo tubes and carries the Spearfish heavyweight torpedo, allowing it to engage submerged or surface targets at ranges up to 65 kilometres (40 miles).
One submarine is normally undergoing maintenance and the remaining two in port or on training exercises.

Completed with the Polaris A2 missiles, the JAMES MONROE received the 2500-mile range Polaris A3 in 1968-70 and was refitted with the Poseidon missiles between 1969-78.
Decommissioned and stricken from the Navy list on September 25, 1990, the JAMES MONROE spent the next years at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash., until she entered the Navy's submarine recycling program.
President Madison appointed him Secretary of State in 1811 and added the War-Department portfolio to his duties during the closing months of the War of 1812.

The Seawolf class originally was planned for 29 subs, but with the end of the Cold War, it was truncated to three, with two built and one scheduled.

In February 1956 the Navy announced that GRAYBACK and GROWLER, originally laid down as diesel-electric attack submarines, were to be completed as guided-missile submarines for the deployment of Regulus.
The two submarines were cut in two and cylindrical hangers installed above the bows to carry the missiles.  Automatic loading and firing gear enabled the submarines to surface, extract the Regulus missile from its hanger straight onto an inclinded launching ramp, thus allowing the submarine to fire the missile and submerge immediately.
The Polaris A-1 first fired by the GEORGE WASHINGTON had an impressive range of 1,200 nautical miles.  However, this was immediately increased by the incorporation of the new improved Polaris A-2 by 300 nautical miles to 1,500 miles.

Technological advances meant the combat systems were outdated before the first submarine hit the water in 1993 and the new agreement is designed to ensure the situation is not repeated.
Last year the government ordered US torpedoes for the submarines but they were found to be too heavy and the entire fleet needed to be modified so they could be used.

Commissioned in 1994, USS Charlotte lives up to its motto as the “Silent Stinger.” An improved Los Angeles class submarine, Charlotte is 360 feet long, displaces 6,900 tons of water, and can travel in excess of 25 knots.
With stealth, endurance and agility, fast-attack submarines are multi-mission capable — able to deploy and support special forces operations, disrupt and destroy an adversary’s military and economic operations at sea, provide early strike from close proximity, and ensure undersea superiority.

The lead ship of her class The Lafayette class of submarine was an evolutionary development from the Ethan Allen class of fleet ballistic missile submarine, slightly larger and generally improved.
She began the Navy's Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at Bremerton, Washington, the day she was stricken.
On February 25, 1992, the ship no longer existed as an entity and was classed as scrapped.

During the fall of 1964, the fleet ballistic missile submarine completed two shakedown cruises—one for each crew—and a period of antisubmarine warfare (ASW) training between the two.
On 22 December, the submarine's Gold Crew fired her first Polaris missile on the Atlantic missile range before returning to Newport News for Christmas.
The submarine joined Submarine Squadron 18 (SubRon 18) at Charleston, South Carolina, her new base of operations, and immediately began conducting strategic deterrent patrols.
