Surviving are four sons, James G.K. McClure Clarke, Douglas Dixon Clarke and William Clarke, all of Fairview, and Dumont Clarke IV of Charlotte; two daughters, Susie Clarke Hamilton and Annie Clarke Ager; and 21 grandchildren.
A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late Bobby Gray Rumfelt and granddaughter of the late Bessie and Hoyt Rumfelt and George and Kate Johnson.

Elspeth McClure Clarke, lifelong resident of Fairview and community leader, passed away November 30 at the age of 78 in the family home (the old Sherrill's Inn) at Hickory Nut Gap Farm.
Clarke was the wife of former U.S. congressman, state senator and representative, and school board member James McClure Clarke, who died April 13, 1999.
Clarke and her late husband, Congressman Charles Taylor has introduced a bill into the U.S. House to honor them both by renaming a section of the Nantahala National Forest in Jackson County for them.

Clarke, matriarch of the large Clarke clan - with eight children, 21 grandchildren and five great- grandchildren - died peacefully in her sleep early Friday after a month-long illness, her son-in-law John Ager said.
Those who were close to Elspeth Clarke, including longtime friends Betty Holden and Mimi Cecil, say she lived with vigor and passion and died with peace and serenity, and that her children have followed her legacy of living life to the fullest.
Clarke inherited from her family, was the site of the Clarkes' farm, where they raised apples, chickens, pigs, cattle, horses and a large garden to feed family and friends.

James Clarke and Co were also publishers of a series of children's chapbooks in coloured wrappers, with wood engravings, and catalogues on the back covers: two copies, of Aladdin and Cinderella, bear the dates 1829 and 1836 respectively.

Clarke's working life included dairy and apple farming, eight years as senior editor of the Asheville Citizen-Times in the 1960s and managing the Farmers Federation and of the McClure Scholarship Fund, which was responsible for 50 to 100 college scholarships a year.
Clarke and Republican Rep. Bill Hendon spent the 1980s battling over the 11th District U.S. House seat.
