Varnum, James Mitchell (17 Dec. 1748-9 Jan. 1789), lawyer, revolutionary war general, and judge, was born in Dracut, Massachusetts, the son of Samuel Varnum and Hannah Mitchell, affluent farmers who had James prepared for Harvard College.
Varnum's popularity stemmed from several personal traits: his superior wit and intelligence, his outstanding oratorical skills, his admired competence in a wide range of scholarly subjects, and even his celebrated athletic abilities.
Varnum returned to full-time legal practice in East Greenwich, and the state of Rhode Island honored him with the rank of major general in the state militia.
