By the beginning of the 20th century Flagg was one of America's leading illustrators.
Flagg's visits to the editorial office became frequent, and the young illustrator was always assured of a warm welcome and of a keen interest in his work, some of which the magazine published, though of course the drawings of that time had in them more of promise than of fulfillment.
James Montgomery Flagg first painted his famous Uncle Sam for a 4th of July 1916 issue of Leslie's magazine.

James Montgomery Flagg was born in Pelham Manor, New York to businessman Elisha Flagg and socialite Anna Elida Coburn.
Flagg became interested in art at a very young age, claiming that he started drawing at the age of two, but “not very well.” (82) By age eight he was fashioning his own brushes from his hair and a stick.
Flagg chose to see war as an exciting adventure and Flagg biographer Susan E. Meyer comments that “he was convinced that men went to war for excitement, not for noble ideals.” (87) Flagg, enflamed with the passion of war but too old for combat, vigorously answered his country’s call to duty through his art.

James Montgomery Flagg (1877 - 1960) was incredibly relevant to 'Vietnam era' youth (with a past wartime appeal) in his "I WANT YOU" posters, ironically remembered, in the late 60's--- when I questioned my Aunt Olga about it, she wrote the Akron Beacon Journal and they sent her the poster.

Fortunately, Flagg was already too old to fight by the time World War I erupted, because he did not have the proper attitude for battle: he was convinced that men went to war for excitement, not for noble ideals.
Flagg's Uncle Sam poster was so successful that he stopped attending the weekly meetings of the Division of Pictorial Publicity: "I became horribly bored with rising toasts." Although he continued to be a member of the group, he worked alone, and during the course of the war he designed forty-six posters.

Print a copy of the 1917 Flagg poster for each student, or prepare a slide that can be shown to the entire group.
Apparently James Montgomery Flagg got the idea for his I Want You poster from Alfred Leete's 1914 British recruiting poster featuring Lord Kitchener (shown below), which by 1917 had shown itself to be exceptionally effective in Great Briton.

I am 19 years old and I was born and raised in central Illinois My Aunt Mary did an extensive history of the Flagg family background.
I found out that James Montgomery Flagg, who did the art work for the poster "I want you for the US Army", is my Great Great Great Grandfather.
My Aunt Mary E Casten formally a Flagg just passed away in Sept. of last year and now I have to try and finish the more recent part of our family tree.
